Brampton won this game at the Alcott Arena 14-6 on Saturday, then claimed an 8-4 victory in Brampton on Sunday, to extend Georgetown’s losing streak to five straight games. However, this weekend the Raiders will have a new goaltender after having signed Carmello Giurello, last year’s starter who was a league all-star. Giurello will see action this weekend. However, he began the season trying to earn a roster spot with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves, but was released just after the start of the 1992-93 campaign. He returned to the Raiders a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t sign on immediately because he couldn’t be guaranteed playing time. When the Ottawa 67s of the OHL had injuries to their goaltending corps, Giurello spent the weekend with the team. However, Giurello was back with the Raiders at Tuesday night’s practice and signed a card with the Georgetown club. To make room for Giurello, the Raiders have given backup goaltender Jamie Szyc per- mission to skate with any club of his choosing. The addition of Giurello should bolster a position that was a sore point this past weekend. Szyc and starter Jason Sirota allowed 29 goals in three defeats, which extended Georgetown’s losing streak to five games and dropped the team to sixth in the seven-team West Division. The Raiders began the season with three consecutive victories. “I can’t say anything to discredit Jamie because he did everything we asked of him,’’ Raider general manager Finn Poulstrup said. “It’s just that when you have an opportu- nity at age two No. 1 goalies, what do Raiders. ome Charlie Hanman d, greed. “Getting Carm is bitter-sweet,”” Hanman said. “On one hand I’m glad because Carm is a good goal- tender and I know what he can do. “On the other hand, having to let Jamie go is hard because he’s an awful nice person to have on your team. But right now we’ve got two No. 1 goalies and it’s time to estab- lish something.”” man said Giurello was sched- uled to have played in the Raiders game Friday night in Milton. If Giurello plays well there, he will get the starting nod for tonight’s home game against the Oakville Blades (faceoff time at Alcott Arena is 7:30 p.m.). However, Hanman said that’s not to suggest Giurello has the starting job merely be default. “T have two goalies and I'll play the one who can do the job,’” Hanman said. “All I’m asking is that they stop the puck.’” When Giurello first arrived here after failing to catch on in Sudbury, there was talk that, with three quali- ty goaltenders in camp, the Raiders could possibly trade a netminder ot Of md DF ca Os 59 Di F) 2 $ % E & FAST * FULL SERVICE AND COMPLETE CAR CLEANING We Use @ Products * OTHER BRANDS. ‘AVAILABLE * * OIL CHANGES Don't Forget Your Discount Card - Pay for 6 - Get 1 for FR for an experienced defenceman. With a blueline corps that features four first-year players, such a deal would’ ve been tailor made. But Poulstrup said the teams he talked with wanted too much in return. “Tt seems to me that the majority of people wanted a good player but not in a situation where they had to give up something in return,’’ he said. “It would’ ve been nice, but really I didn’t expect to get a No. 1 defenceman.” Still, Hanman is looking forward to the weekend contests. The team captains organized a players-only team meeting Tuesday night, and proceeded to have their best prac- tice of the season, the coach said. He’s hoping that will carry on to the two games. “I was really pleased with Tuesday’s practice,’’ Hanman said. “J think the players realize the only way we’re going to get out of this is by continuing to work hard because there’s no magic formula. “We're coming off a horrendous week and a half. All we can do is get better one week at a time.’” NOTES Raider right-wingers Dean Doner (pelvis) and Jonathan Levack (neck) skated Tuesday night, but neither player is expected to play this weekend. Defenceman Colin Hooper (ankle) is also ques- tionable . . . The Georgetown team. hasn’t been informed of the out- come of its protest against the Caledon Canadians after the Raiders 7-3 loss on Oct. 22. The Raiders protested the game over the use of an illegal Caledon player. Chinguacousy hands atoms tough defeat Last Sunday night the M and M minor atoms lost a tough hockey game in Chinguacousy. The final was was 4-1. The Georgetown team had good goaltending from Simon Deeley, but he needs a little help from his friends. Sean McArthur scored the only Raider goal, with Ryan Inglis and Chase Trull notching the assists. Come out and support these little Raiders.
