FREE Coffee& Snacks OCT 31 Treats for the Kids ONLY Goals hard to come by for Hurricanes Rough time for bantams The Halton Hurricanes major bantam squad is going through a rough time in league play. They can’t buy a win and goals are very ~ hard to come by. On Oct. 21., they dropped a 4-1 decision to Brampton at the Tonelli Arena in Milton. The Leaver Mushroom team directed 30 shots at the Brampton goal, but forgot its defensive responsibilities and allowed 50 shots on goal. Included in that total was an exciting Brampton penalty shot that goalie Kevin Wilson successfully thwart- ed. Unfortunately, Wilson was injured on the play, but backup Cam Warden stepped in with a good showing. The Hurricanes’ lone goal came late in the third period as Daryl Loader tapped in a lovely goal-mouth feed from Scott Bertolli. The previous week the Hurricanes were shut out in back- to-back games. In Burlington on Oct. 15, their perennial rivals hung a 4-0 loss on the visitors. It was a —tight game all the way before two late lapses let Burlington seal the win. The Hurricanes carried most of the play and despite a lot of close-in chances, especially on the power play, all the Halton team could manage is to hit the goalpost four times. The Mainway Arena hex continues. The night before, Barrie visited the Tonelli Arena and earned a con- vincing 5-0 win. Halton was ready with its forechecking and hustle, but couldn’t penetrate Barrie’s zone consistently or effectively. Barrie kept Halton to the side, allowing only low-percentage shots. Halton checked vigorously in the slot area, preventing any success. It was a clean, physical game, with th teams testing the goalies with screened shots. The Halton defence was pressured all night, with Wilson having to make many tough stops just to keep the score in heck. Next time, the Hurricanes will look to set the pace and register an early goal. The Hurricanes team has a pair of Erin Minor Hockey Association representatives _ Kris Holtom and Paul Brennan _ in its ranks. They are newcomers who joined. the squad with players from three other centres: Milton, which contributed nine player; Flamboro with seven; and Georgetown with one. The team is just starting to mesh and is looking for better performances in the near future. The next big test for the team is the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., starting Nov. 5.
