BIA defends core of Georgetown Continued from page 1 and make them aware of the goods and services available in the down- town area. “We're putting together a profes- sional package to target areas like Georgetown South,” Stephens said. The brochure, which will list ser- vices and downtown stores, is expected to be ready for distribu- tion early in 1993 and will be avail- able at the library, the town hall and realtors’ offices. It’ll also be mailed to Georgetown South resi- dents. Principal's Corner Bryne Davies, Principal ong in District High Sch Last aa S$ tragic death of Jeremiah Fendley during a gym class will continue to be felt by our students and staff for a long time to come. Jeremiah was struck by a heart disease that could not have been detected in advance without thor- ough medical testing. He collapsed during a volleyball match and never regained consciousness. While school carried on, as we must, priority was given to support- ing students and staff in their grief and time of need. The Board’s Tragic Events Response Team was called in to assist staff and students, and their support was most helpful. Friends of Jeremiah came in early Friday morning to write a eulogy and to plan a memorial dis- play in Jeremiah’s memory. The memorial will be in the library foyer display case until Friday. It contains photographs and some of ~Seremiah’ s hi i ockey eq) The expressions of support from students, staff and the community have been overwhelming, and are a measure of the “love of life” by which Jeremiah will always be remembered. The following poem was written last week as part of the eulogy in memory of Jeremiah Fendley: It’s raining outside, or is it the tears running down our faces? We’ll always remember certain words and special places. The love and the bonding was in the air, every time you were there. Away you go through that spe- cial door. We’d give anything to see you just once more. We hope your dreams and wishes come true even though we won’t be there to see them through. All we seem to do is cry All we wish for is to say good- bye. The BIA also plans to put togeth- er another pamphlet which will contain current information about retail properties in the downtown and the benefits of locating there. To accomplish this and other downtown promotion projects, the BIA recently voted to increase its advertising budget for 1993 by 100. The promotions budget is expected to total somewhere Salas $13,000 and $15,000 next oe ua rsiepths said the BIA favors time, however, the local business organization wants to see develop- ment “in pint with. the character of the downto ‘We don’ ie want a 20-storey building in the downtown,” Vint remarked, hinting that the BIA probably has a lot of common areas of a agreement with a local ratepayers’ group known as (RAIDD) Residents Active in Development Decisions. The group wants the downtown area’s small- town character maintained and the BIA has no argument with that, Stephens added. There does, however, appear to be a difference of opinion as to how the downtown’s “character” is to be maintained. RAIDD’s presi- dent Ken Thorn recently asked Halton Hills Town Council to endorse the extension of Market Street from Wesleyan to James. If the extension is approved, it'll quash plans for a Market Street development proposal for an 86- unit condominium complex con- sisting of four apartments ranging from four to six storeys in height. The BIA has gone on record as opposed to the Market Street exten- sion and in favor of the condo development. Nevertheless, Stephens maintains, “If the BIA board and members of RAIDD were to sit down around a table, we would probably find that we have a lot of ideas in common.” Town council is expected to make a decision on the street exten- sion early in the 1993. At the same time, they’ll be looking at the pros and cons of low and medium resi- dential density in the downtown core. 9 ~— TODD SIMPSON Insurance Services I'VE “ NEw ADDRESS * RR #5 CaLepon East * NEw PHONE NUMBER * 416-951-2047 * OR * 1-800-268-4393 * I LOOK FORWARD TO DON'T WORRY!
