Page 6 — Halton Hills This Week, Wednesday, January 6, 1993 Garth Turner MP Halton-Peel Since being elected MP, I’ve held over 50 Townhall meetings in this sprawling riding. Some meetings have been riotous, and some extremely con- structive. Sometimes the room has been stuffed with people. Sometimes just four or five of us just sat around talking things over for a couple of hours. Over this time, thousands of people have participated, and out of these eee have come many Teports to the government on what people who live here figure Ottawa should be doing. Those gatherings are important to me, because the political system should work from the bottom up. It’s not my role to come from Ottawa: and tell you why the gov- ernment is doing something. Sure, I have to be accountable, and I will be. But more to the Parliament Hill report point, it’s my role to tell the politi- cal bee what this community outlined here before Christmas, I am asking now for a number of things, including more tax cuts, a smaller cabinet, fewer government departments, more breaks for small business, reform of MPs pensions, balanced budget legislation and a family tax return so single-income families with a stay-at-home spouse don’t pay more than their share. ‘There is a Throne Speech com- ing up, and another budget after that - so the time is right for us to spell out a federal wish list. You can be sure all the special interest groups are out there, bend- ing the politicians’ ears. It’s cru- cial that middle class Canadians be heard just as clearly. So, let’s have some more meet- ings. I’d like to give everyone more opportunities to speak up for those things which are important to you, so that I can relate that to the government. Yes, I know some people are telling you we should all be frus- trated and angry at governments and politicians. They tell you that. somehow by replacing the politi- cians we now have that things will get better. Well, I’ve got news for you. od '$ NO guarantee that will hap- Pied we have to change the system. Citizens have to be more involved in the political process - on an ongoing basis, not just when there’s an election. How can we ever get the kind of country we want if we don’t speak up for the values we believe in? So, please take the time to come to one of the Townhall meetings this month, so we can talk. Come and tell me the kinds of things you think that. 1993 should bring. Tell me what ideas of mine you sup- port, and which you disagree with. Help me do my job. It’s a big one, and I take it seriously. Here’s a reminder of the meet- ings - you should have received notice of them just before Christmas. See you there.
