Store business experienced a big boost in 1983, when Dave’s eldest son, Michael, joined the IGA team after receiving an honors degree in business. Aptly described as a “family business,” the Acton IGA team also includes Dave’s son-in-law, Kelly McArthur who is produce manager and Dave’s other two sons, John and Tom. His daughter worked as store cashier for years and the books are looked after by his wife, * as well as Micheal’s wife. Recognizing the importance of getting involved with and support- ing the community, Dave is a past president and 30-year member of the Acton Rotary Club. He also served as chairman of the Salvation Army and is a member of the Shriners’ Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. Michael, a past president of the Acton Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the Chamber of Commerce, is also active in com- munity organizations. Acton IGA has been generous in its support of the community. This year, alone, it has purchased a 30- inch television and VCR for Robert the library and computers for M.Z.Bennett School. For more than 25 years, the store has been an ardent supporter of various youth sporting groups, including. minor hockey, baseball, lacrosse, swim teams and soccer. Adult leagues have also been sup- ort ported. Charities benefit from tape-sav- ing program at the store which nets about $3,000 each year. Senior citi- zens are entitled to a five per cent discount on all purchases. Groceries are delivered free to seniors and free rides to the IGA are provided for them every Wednesday. The store is proud of its reputa- tion for attracting and keeping quality employees. Charlie Auger has worked there for 27 years and Jane Taillefer, for 22 years. Several others have worked there for more than a decade. Many of its student employees have gone on to distin- guished careers, such as doctors, stockbrokers or lawyers. Acton IGA employs about 70 local residents on a full-time or part-time basis. It has grown with the community and plans to remain a vibrant part of it for years to come. The official awards dinner will be held Wednesday, February 24 to honor this longtime community business.
