People think, ‘T don’ t know you, I don’t trust you While she could not describe any specific incidence of racism in the community, Carmichael said she has experienced racial tension here. “It’s something you feel. Like someone who stares a bit ioo long at you. Or when I send somebody a resume for a job. My name sounds very Anglo, very English, so they expect a white person to walk through the door,” Carmichael said. “Then when I show up for an inter- view, you can see the visible shock on people’s faces. Yes, this hap- pened in Georgetown. “The only basis for this response is the lack of knowledge. When I tell people I’m from Venezuela, they assume I know drug dealers. They stereotype all Latin Americans. It’s really sad.” While she lives in rural Halton Hills, Carmichael added that she would not feel comfortable living within the boundaries of Georgetown. “There are a lot of very good. people in Georgetown, but also a lot of back-dealing,” Carmichael said. “We need to sit down around atable and talk. That is my dream, He tae everybody sit down and SSE problems of the kids is what they learned at home. And the lack of services in the community for everyone. They get so much in the south (of Halton). But we have to talk openly.” Carmichael may get part of her J dream to come true. She is current- ly working to gather a group of concerned citizens who want to "lack of education" stamp out racism in Halton Hills. Her effort is being assisted by Saleem Yacoub, a consultant with the Ontario Anti-Racism Secretariat of the Ministry of Citizenship. The pair are attempting to pull together a group 10-15 community leaders for their first meeting on Tues. Jan. 26 in Georgetown. The purpose of this informal gathering will be to discuss future plans for the area, if anything like Saturday Klan incursion should ever occur “We have to get to know each other, so that we are comfortable calling on each other in a crisis,” she said. “A representative of each denomination of church will be-pre- sent: and we have talked to Superintendent Rick Dawson with the Halton Police. We will sit down and talk, and maybe even yell a bit. I think that’s when everything starts to come out,” Carmichael said. “Every cloud has a silver lining,” she added. “This is a great achieve- ment, that we will sit down without politicians and without political correctness. Crime Stoppers of Halton By Sgt. Dan Farr Halton Regional Police detectives in Oakville and Crime Stoppers are appealing to the public for any information that will lead to identity and arrest of the 3 men responsible for the sexual assault on a 26 year old woman in Oakville. On Friday November 13, 1992 at approximately 5 p.m. a 26-year-old woman was found by a motorist laying on the south side of Lakeshore Road in the area of the Third Line near the boat ramp at Coronation Park. The woman had been sexually assaulted and dropped off by her three assailants at this location. The victim had left the Burlington Arms situated beside the Burlington Bowl at Harvester Rd. and Walkers Line and caught a bus to the GO Station on Harvester Rd., just east of Appleby Line. The victim began hitchhiking and was picked up by three men in a white van with side win- dows in it. There was also a prominent stripe (possibly green) along the side of the van. The two suspects in the rear of the van sexually assaulted the woman from that time until she was dropped off, along with the clothing, at the Lakeshore Road location. The two suspects in the rear of the van are described as: 1.
