In the last two weeks, leading challengers to the Hustlers, Gasketman Cutters, have faltered. The shortage of players has con- tributed to the demise from second to fourth place in the standings. Having lost all fourteen points two Wednesdays ago, this past Wednesday saw a miniature come- back with six points from fourteen. However, those above, leaders Hustlers, Steeprock and Westenders, played well enough to pull away just a little more. Hustlers lead by 12 points from Westenders who, in turn, are two in front of Steeprock. Gasketman are five adrift of third place for the moment. Bruce Stevens opened with 148 in his first throw of the night. Ian McDonald started with 105 (he also scored a zero, against Hustlers). Jeff Richardson makes a habit of high finishes and this week he collected a 100 finish to lead this category for the night. He also knocked off an 86 finish with Rod Beaumont polishing off 84. ‘The straight high scoring has 140 as best and, of course, no higher and Neil Olmstead achieved the tar- get. Several 140’s came in and Dennis Thorogood, Brian Hicks, Jim Watson, Horst Schirm, Eric Fuller and Tim Field. Joe Poirier appears to have scoréd 174, if I read the game sheet correctly. On a busy Saturday for me, the Legion hosted the Annual Fred Gilmer double tournament. For a change, the names of Ron Scarlett/Beau Beaumont do not adorn the trophy, the lads having gone down in the semi finals to Tan McDonald/Gary Rodda. Paul Kirby/Orville Paul also reached the semi finals only to go down to Rod Beaumont/Alex Tough. The finalists squared off having already played two sets in round robin and avoiding each other in the semis. At this stage of the proceedings, the teams were tied 1-1. In a way it seemed fitting that they should have a “rubber” match in the final to decide. The Beaumont name will still be on the trophy as Rod and self pulled off a victory. Other doubles amongst the ten which took part were Dennis Thorogood/Jim Fisher, Eric Fuller/Joe Cairns, Larry Hunt/Dan Abercrombie, Dave NcNeilly/Keith Ewing, George O’Neil/Bill McCartney and Chuck Tutty/Jim Watson. Legion #4 defeated Time Out 11-3, McGibbon 11-3 over George #3, George #2 struggled to 9-5 over Time Out #1 and O’Tooles pulled off a 12-2 win over Legion #1 which takes care of the top half of the league. Meanwhile, Copper Kettle defeated Legion 9-5 (and not 0-6 as ‘on the match set), Kettle #2 went down 3-11 to George #1 and Legion #2 just made it through 8-6 over George #4. In the George #4/Legion #2 clash, the top four singles were tied before Legion took three of the bot- tom four for the lead. The doubles and teams were also tied, making the singles wins cru- cial. Sherri Reid, Yvonne Graham and Barb Hope defeated Andrew Woolley, John. Shannon and “dummy” respectively for those points. Another match close in standings was between O’Tooles and Legion #1. The mixed male/female team from O’Tooles took both teams games to take the early lead and then broke even more loose in the singles taking seven of eight. The only point gained for the Legion came from Keith Ewing who won over Dave Scutt. Dave MeNeilly/Karen Buckley defeated Hugh Smid/Marty Wheeler in dou- bles for the other Legion point. 180s for Jack Hamilton, Stan Rhynold, Pete Pickering and Billy Blackbourne. A 111 high finish was struck by Andrew Woolley, Erwin See finished 146 and Ian McDonald took out 157. Other high scores were 174 from Gary Pfingstl, and Shirley Penfold 156 from Hank Van Gogh and 150 from Todd Axford and his off-bal- ance throwing style. Triple 140’s were scored by Stan Rhynold, Dave Scutt and Paul Kirby with many others hitting for single 140. Wayne Eagles shot 138, Sherri Reid 134. Those are the main highlights of the Monday night league. Returning to the Legion doubles for a final moment, Dennis Thorogood scored a maximum (180) and Rod Beaumont took out 146 and I left him several other high finish attempts which he did not complete!
