A young Georgetown Chrysler Raiders fan attracted the attention of playersDavid Kennedy and Bryan Gendron during an autograph ses- sion prior to Saturday night’s game against Burlington. Raiders, Cougars split their weekend series Continued from page 11 Georgetown gave the starting nod to third-string goaltender David Kennedy, but he was replaced by starter Jason Sirota. The Raiders appeared headed to a similar fate Saturday night, trail- ing the visiting Cougars 3-1 head- ing into the third. After Ante Galic’s power-play goal gave Georgetown the early Toad in the first period, Burlington took control of the second, outscor- ing Georgetown 3-0 to take a two- goal advantage. However, after Ford’s little chat during the second-period intermis- sion, the Raiders caught fire in the third. Kris Arro got the offensive fire- works going at the 2:26 mark. Jonathan McKee, who finished the game with a goal and two assists, scored at 7:59 before Bond cashed in on the power play at 10:15. Twenty seconds later Brandt scored. But it wasn’t until Steve Davis scored into the empty net with Georgetown killing a Burlington power play that the outcome was decided. The victory was also Ford’s first at the Raider helm, snapping a per- sonal 15-game winless streak. Ford, who took over the Raiders after then-coach Charlie Hanman and assistant Bert Osborne figured the club needed a coaching change and announced they would step down, improved his bench record to 1-14- 1, Ironically, all three points have come at the expense of Burlington. Ford wasn’t behind the bench for the Royal York win, having instead to attend a business commitment. Assistant coach Jay Anderson assumed coaching duties for that me, with Ford returning in time for Friday’s game. The weekend was a busy one for Raider forward Brandt and defenceman Steve Weishar. Both were members of the West Division all-star team that dropped a 6-5 decision to the East team Saturday in Burlington. Brandt, Georgetown’s leading scorer, was named to the team, with Weishar joining as an alternate. Bantams down Brampton The minor bantam Hurricanes beat Brampton 2-0 in a first round OMHA playoff game at Thompson Arena on January 24. The first period was sluggish as the teams tested each other before Peter Mashinter dug the puck out of a corner at the 2:47 mark and Jon Atley feathered a pass to Tom Baynton who snapped in the open- ing goal. Geoff Beauparlant was solid in net to earn a shutout and keep Halton in the game since they played most of the second period with players in the box. Baynton, Doug Janjevich, Curtis Carr and Jamie Walker were all over the ice killing penalties as the Hurricanes held Brampton off the score sheet. The third period featured some heavy hitting with the only goal coming at 13:06 when Darin Finlayson took a pass from Steven oy, broke in on the goalie and at the last minute flipped it to centre Justin Davis who scored. Winger Danny Haw was out with a shoul- der injury and Davis’ return from two missed games was timely. Defencemen Robert “The Hammer” Haringa, Matt “Boom Boom” Vervoorn and Richard “Big Train” Trotter punished any Brampton players who ventured into their zone. Next game is on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Arena in Brampton.
