Suppose you buy stocks for $50,000 and sell them for $100,000. You would have made a $50,000 capital gain. On that profit you pay no taxes if you have not made any other capital gains that put you over the $100,000 limit. Naturally, this means that we should all work to make our lifetime $100,000 capital gain since there is a tax shelter attached. If you have already made your $100,000 capital gain and you make additional capital gains, these gains also get preferential tax treatment. They attract tax at your personal tax rate but only for 75% of the capital gain. This is still significantly better than paying full tax on interest income. Short of making a large investment in an item and hoping for a capital gain, what other options exist? One option is to invest in a fixed income instrument that pays its interest income annually, say at year end. If you receive the interest it is taxable as interest income at your personal marginal tax rate. However, if the instrument is liquid and part of its stated market value is the interest accumulated, you can sell the instrument and claim the resultant income as capital gain.
