It was work, work and more work, (and little time for a breather) as Georgetown Chrysler Raiders brass | ible prospects at a three-night rookie tryout camp which got underway Tuesday night at checked out poss! Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena. by Colin Gibson Georgetown Chrysler Raiders are wasting no time in trying to make amends for what turned-out to be-a dismal 1992/93 season in the West Division: of the Central Ontario Junior ‘A’ Hockey League. Raiders finished. seventh out of eight teams in the West Division, just qualifying for the playoffs, then were shunted aside by Burlington Cougars in three straight games in the opening round best-of-five series. Tuesday night at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena, upwards of 80 Raiders hopefuls answered written invitations in the best possible way, by donning ‘the blades in’ the open- ing session of a three-night rookie tryout camp. Action continued Thursday night and evaluations will wind up this Tuesday, with a final three-hour session scheduled to start at 7:30 p-m., again at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena. Raiders coach Gary Ford was on hand _last-Tuesday. hoping to find a potential diamond hiding in the hockey dust flying around .the Payei26 Halton Fills ThisWeek; Saturday ciAprit'#7, 1993+ Raiders test poeeey hopefuls Gary Ford frozen pond and while admitting it was far too early to make conclu- sive judgments on the rookies, did say he saw some who showed par- ticular promise. “We’re looking for tough play- ers,” said Ford. “Tough mentally and physically, who will answer the bell when they are called. I liked what I saw from at least half-a- dozen players, but you have to real- ize, they’re under some pressure, are playing with strangers and you really can’t tell how they’ll react under game conditions. But then, photo by Simon Wilson/HHTW that’s why we have tryout camps.” Although the majority of those auditioning for Raiders brass were. from the Georgetown-Greater Metro Toronto area, a number of players showed up from Walkerton, Markdale and Fergus. Stalwart Raider netminder Jason Sirota is taking his talents south of the border, after accepting a hockey scholarship at Fredonia State University in upstate New York, but there seems to be more than enough bodies available to face the hard rubber disc for the Georgetown squad as 20 potential goaltenders turned up at Gordon Alcott Tuesday night. This large number saw the usual camp routine of skating, shooting and scrimmaging broken up Thursday night, as the first full hour was devoted strictly to goal- tending assessment. -One hundred-and- -eighty invita- tions to the Raiders rookie camp were mailed out and Ford is hope- ful he will be able, by separating the wheat from the chaff, to invite 20-25 players to the main Raider camp scheduled for later this sum- mer. By Colin Gibson It has been a banner year for members of the Acton Figure Skating Club, highlighted by the accomplishments of 10-year-old icGilloway. Cara capped her stellar skating season at the Ontario Interclub Championships held in Tillsonburg March’ 20, where her 9th in Figures and 3rd in Freeskate gave her an overall standing of 6th out of 12 skaters, in the province. Her season began in December when she placed first in the Preliminary Ladies Freeskaté at the Acton club’s own- Club Competition This win advanced her to the Interclub Championships held in Milton and Erin Mills in February. In Milton Cara finished first in her flight and in Erin Mills, she fin- ished first overall. This qualified her to advance to the Central Ontario Section “Interclub Championships (C.O.S.I1.C.) in Scarborough early in March. In the Scarborough competition, Cara placed second overall, with the top three finishers advancing to the All-Ontarios in Tillsonburg. All those associated with the Acton Figure Skating Club are proud of Cara’s accomplishments. By the same token, Cara’s fig- ure skating feats not only reflect well on the club as a whole, but also added extra incentive to younger - and older - up and com- ing skaters, to emulate and even surpass her accomplishments. Acton Figure Skating Club members responded well to Cara’s challenge Ms Fcncaence and answered in aes ‘93 } “Coach Cindy Currie took 19 skaters to the competition and the team came home with 32 medals - 12 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze.
