Hollywood Tavern emerged on top, raising $5,455, while the Loretto line photo by Simon Wilson/HHTW "A Symphony of Song’ takes to stage May 8 The Georgetown and Achill Choral Societies have joined forces once again to present a spring con- cert on May 8,. 8 p.m. This year’s concert is called “A Symphony of Song” and the choir will be accom- panied by the Oakville Symphony. The Oakville Symphony is familiar to Halton Hills audiences as they perfc re at the invitation of the University Women’s Club. Excerpts from two major works will be presented - Bach’s Mass in B Minor and Brahm’s Requiem. Several lighter pieces such as They Rhythm of Life and Feller from Fortune will round out the evening. While the performers and the music may be familiar, the location marks a change for the chojr. Mayfield Secondary School, a shi drive from Georgetown, is a cen point for Achill, Georgetown and” lon choir members to meet. Tickets for A Symphony of Song are $10 each and are available at Oxbow Books, Main St. or from any choir member. Benny and Joon is too contrived By Dawn Wood and Lawson Oates Special From the promotional previews of Benny and Joon you would expect to see another kitschy teenage comedy. Expect different- ly. Benny and Joon is foremost an expose of the trials and tribulations of life for those who are mentally ill and their families. This is noth- ing new to the big screen, but in fact, is one film in a genre that includes productions such as The Fisher King, Cybil, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The story is about Benny (Aidan Quinn) and his mentally disabled together since the death of their parents, but Joon’s psychotic con- dition has posed questions regard- ing the suitability of her living with her brother. She has scared away numerous housekeepers and is on her way to a group home. until she ironically loses a poker hand and “wins” the other player’s cousin who she takes home as a “domestic engineer”. Enter Johnny Depp as Sam. Johnny Depp is Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin incarnate. He has mastered some of their arts and brings a lighter side to the . He is as offbeat as Joon, and together they make an extraordi- nary couple. Though Johnny Depp is the most well known actor in this movie (last major production was Edward Scissorhands), his role is limited to mostly slapstick acts. He is report- ed to have studied hard to mimic the routines of Keaton and Chaplin,. the role models his character inter- nalizes. The investment has defi- nitely paid off. Movie Review The performances of Masterson and Quinn are much more dramatic and serious roles. She bears the pressures of Quinn’s paternalistic, over-protective love for her and his selflessness. Under this pressure she rebels within the Constraints of her disability. isi: movie is fun to watch, but is trived in its plot and unreal- istic i in ci tesolution. These are not major offenses in themselves, but are definitely not issues in a come- dy. 877-4161 HOLLYWOOD TAVERN *APLACE WHERE FRIENDS MEET" Sua LIVE BAND Every Thurs., Fri., Sat. With Sat.
