It is back to my first love, soccer, for a few months. My, how the time does fly! Senior soccer opened last Wednesday and youth opened this past Saturday. Both days had sun- shine. However, there the similarity ends. Wednesday was dry and chilly whereas Saturday was warm and wet. The fields were ready for play as promised by Barry Shynal and his staff, of the Recreation and Parks Department. All are warmly thanked for their cooperation in get- ting us off to a good start. This is the season of wild driving, cyclists on both sides of the road, many runners and walkers, lots of little people on the way to and from games. It is the season to go about our pleasures very carefully, watch- ing all round as we go.. Busy PI: jusy Cedarvale and Alcott were busy places on the weekend and I did manage to attend for a short while. Some of the older girls’ teams were in action and some nice soccer was being attempted. All players are in recreational play this season, with combined play with Acton, Brampton and Milton in some, if not all, age groups. George and Pat Baines kept the well-known persons fae in for the first feel of the Soccer Club Opeaing Day saw plenty of action last Saturday at : Cedarvale Park. Under-16 boys division game opener, Time Out Roadhouse centre forward Dean Ellis (#10) challenged the Roadhouse win in exhibition play. McEachren Steering Specialties’ defense on the goalline. Dean scored the games’ only goal for the iH’ to by Simon Wilson/HHTW Champs Impressive County league play, first division league champions Meteor began their defense of the title with an impressive win by 3-1 over Merseyside. The visitors missed a penalty kick at a crucial point in the first half and the Meteor defense kept out the “big” name players. Blazers, who retained their first division status after a league vote, hosted the newly-promoted Meadowvale at Alcott. A fine match took place and the home team lost two goals in the last 10 minutes to throw away the chance of victory. As it was, the match ended 3-3. In the other first division game, Mariners, new look and inexperi- enced for the most part, lost 2-4 to Winchester, who played very well. Winning teams were Mike Hurley and Gord Buchan, Carol Besney and Doug Yool, and Kay King. Losing teams are Ken Kavanagh and Dean Jackson, Jay Anderson and Rene March, Ouida Graville and Vincent Mitera. “B” 2 Mixed played Brampton 2. Teams were John Moore and Tim Gibbons, John Dallison and Tom Dembie, David Harris and Andy Hummeny, Sandy and Gary Lewis, Deb Koster and Ed Rieger. Barb Rieger and Louise Campbell. won in three sets 6-1, 6-7 (7-1), 7- 5. Ajax visited newcomers Caledon and were on the wrong side of an 11-0 result, a surprise to most of us. Milton dropped a 2-1 decision to Stingers yet may win the points as Stingers lost one too many players on the game sheet, the first decisign for the Committee. Falcons made their entrance into the league after several years in the competitive Peel-Halton league. A close match with the strong Eagles was envis- aged and so it turned out. Eagles won 1-0 and get off to a good start. Canadian Chances Slim This was almost the start to the season which would have made the year more exciting than usual. Canada’s attempt to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals was thwart- ed after suffering two defeats at the hands, or feet, of Mexico, undoubt- running edly a stronger soccer nation. A first place finish in the section would have automatically qualified us for the finals. As it is, there is a slim chance to still make it through. The second place finish means a further playoff game against either Australia or New Zealand. A victo- ty would fining another playoff against a 8 Nota sacs Prospect and a diffi- cult route to say the least. The English-cup final was tele- vised to some 450,000,000 people on Saturday. The game between Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday was played at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 spectators. The sta- dium is capable of holding 100,000 and the crowd sizes have been dras- tically cut by the authorities in recent years forewing hooliganism and tragedies. The ded in a 1-1 tie, and was an exciting match throughout with both goalkeepers distinguishing themselves. The replay is on Thursday (tomorrow). Rangers vs Aberdeen The Scottish cup final is to come, between Rangers and Aberdeen, with Rangers favorites. In the European cup final between the clubs of A.C. Milan and Marseille, a football feast is expected, Sadly, local soccer has lost a for- mer enthusiast, player, coach and referee in the tragic accident to Peter Jones. Peter played for Falcons, Meteor and Mariners as well as coaching and refereeing at youth level. Paul Hulbert is another loss, although having moved out of the area some years ago. Paul, like Peter, was a former player and coach. A big thank you to Barb and Joey Clare, Tim Davis, Danny Gallagher and self for preparing the lining and nets in time for opening day. We are off and running and I trust we all have an enjoyable season.
