Some grow to about 8-to-10 feet tall by 6-to-8 feet wide while others can cover the entire wall. Don’t buy one that will grow too large otherwise you will be forever pruning it back. Also, give it enough horizontal space to spread out. The more hori- zontal the canes, the more flowers will be produced. For small areas, some of the larger shrub roses can be trained as climbers, as well. Roses are not true climbers as they need support in order to climb up. Climbing roses can be picked out by the large downward curving hooks on their canes which they use to grasp. The standard support is‘ a trellis. Again, make sure that it is tall and wide enough. Most are unfortunately too small, so if you are handy or know someone who is, it is best to make one instead. The trellis should also be set on stand- offs or spacers so that it is 6 inches away from the wall for good air cir- culation around the plant.
