Building code revisions implemented By Oksana Buhel Building Code revisions, which will be implemented July 1, will not be influenced by the death of a Halton Hills woman who was killed when the chimney of her home collapsed last November. Forty nine-year-old Elizabeth Mannell died after the chimney and roof of her Trafalgar Rd. home crashed down into the livingroom where she and her 18-year-old daughter, Deborah, were watching television. Winds outside were gusting at approximately 100 km an hour. Town of Halton Hills director of building code and by-law enforce- ment, Henry Tse, who has been subpoenaed to testify at today’s (Wednesday’s) inquest, stated the = ry FRENCHIE'S FRIES The real Potato at NORVAL ALSO AVAILABLE OCTOBERFEST SAUSAGES 1990 building code “removed the ambiguity of the ‘86 code.” Mannell’s home, constructed in 1987, was designed according to Henry Tse this code, in which lateral chimney braces were recommended “when- ever necessary.” Tse added the 1990 Ontario Building Code “was changes are necessary.” Tse added as a safety measure, Haltan Hills residents would be notified, via inserts in their tax bills, to consult town staff if their unbraced chimney exceeds the height of 11°10”. Further advertis- ing will appear in the town’s Recreation and Parks publication. Tse explained residents will be required to pay for necessary lateral bracing since their homes were constructed according to a valid building code. “What we’re most concerned about, however,” he said, “is public safety.” If a residence does not comply with safety regulations, it may be deemed unsafe, and persons will not be permitted to enter it. “This hardly ever happens,” Tse assured. “T’ve only deemed a home unsafe once since I’ve been director.” Tronically, the home was Mannell’s Halton Hills This Week, Wednesday, June 23, 1993 — Page 3 BOB OFFERS YOU SAVINGS WITH A SPLASH! eX deemed sufficient, and no further _ after the accident.
