Hospital seeks tel housing input Establishing supportive housing for seniors is a major issue in this commu- nity, and one that Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital has been campaigning for since 1991. As a result of the hospi- tal’s ongoing efforts, spear- headed through Social Worker Eunice McGowan, the supportive housing pro- ject is moving one step clos- er to reality. Supportive housing is a combination of housing and support services that enable people with essential sup- port service needs to remain in the community. The project proposed by the hospital, in cooperation with Action Social Services and Information Centre (ASSIC), isa supportive housing facility where daily living needs such as house- keeping and laundry, meal preparation, bathing and shopping would be addressed by on-site support workers. These supportive services. would also be flexible, portable, able to adapt to changing needs and under the individual’s control. “For seniors or physically disabled adults who don’ t require daily individuals enter into the nursing home system pre- maturely simply because community programs such as supportive housing are unavailable or unable to meet the demand. The impetus for this sup- portive housing project began with a Seniors Study in 1991, followed by a recent survey of existing seniors’ apartments in Georgetown and Acton. These ‘studies clearly indi- cated the need for a number of services including trans- portation programs for seniors in these buildings. The hospital is now requesting individuals in Halton Hills who feel their needs could be met through supportive housing to com- plete a questionnaire. “This i i services such as physiother- apy or professional nursing, this type of living situation provides support services and allows them to remain independent and in the com- munity,” says McGowan. According to the statis- tics, 25 to 30 per cent of joes not mean the individual is making a commitment to use the supportive housing services. Instead, it will serve as a means of measur- ing the level of general interest in this type of hous- ing,” outlines McGowan. According to McGowan, there are few supportive housing projects in Ontario, and the one proposed for Halton Hills would be one of the earliest, designed to assist seniors and disabled adults. The community also has the lowest ratio of long- term care beds in the province. If this supportive housing program” is approved, the facility would be completed within the next two to five years, with funding from the provincial Ministries of Health and Housing. Georgetown hospital is keenly interested in finding cost-effective solutions that will address the needs of seniors,” adds John Oliver, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer. “We see supportive housing as a viable option for people who don’t require the level of professional nursing care provided in hospitals or retirement homes.” Questionnaires are avail- able at the Administration Office of Georgetown hos- pital.
