_ Halton Hills This Week, Saturday, August 21, 1993 — Page 15 Shevalier attends junior camp Erin resident and Los Angeles Kings draft pick Jeff Shevalier, has been attending the eight-day eval- uation camp this week for the Canadian national junior team at the U.S. Olympic Training Centre in Lake Placid, N.Y. The camp win ds up tomorrow (Sunday). Shevalier was picked in the seventh round in last year’s National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Kings. This past year was a suc- cessful one for Shevalier who tallied 59 goals and 54 assists for the North Bay Centennials, placing him 11th in the OHL scoring race, before suffering a bro- ken wrist in the playoffs against Kingston. Shevalier ended up with four Centennial awards including MVP, Most Points trophy, Most Sportsmanlike / Academic award and the Achievement award for his 113 point season. As well, Shevalier was chosen to the OHL’s third all-star team. Shevalier played for the then Acton Junior ‘C’ Sabres and also saw playoff action with the then Georgetown Junior ‘B’ Gemini. Shevalier is expected to attend his second camp with the Kings in September. Hornets make championship finals By June Roy The Under-17 Girts Halton Hornets select girls soccer team travelled to Brampton Aug.7 and 8 for their second tournament of the season and thrilled parents and friends as they advanced to the final game undefeated. In their first game, the Hornets faced an aggressive Erin Mills soccer team. The teams played to a 2-2 tie with goals by Kate Blyth and Carla Jenkins. The Hornets second game was against Brams United. The game was tied 1-1 in the first half with a goal by Marci Roy. The second half saw the Hornets dominate the game with Marci Roy getting two more goals for the hat trick with additional goals by Danielle Cary and Kate Blyth. The Hornets next game was Sunday morning against Scarborough United, the same team they met at Grimsby. This time, the Hornets fought to a 2-2 tie which they needed to make the championship game. Scorers for the Hornets were Marci Roy and Carla Jenkins on a free kick. The girls had many chances to score but could not put Scarborough United away. The tie put both teams into the final The championship game against Scarborough United saw the ‘Hornets scoring first with Cheryl Jenkins putting in the rebound on Marci Roy’s shot off the goal post. The Hornets were down 2-1 by the half time. They fought to tie the score, but a free kick awarded to Scarborough made the score 3-1. Fatigue took over as well as an aggressive Scarborough team which went on to finish 5-1 over the Hornets. Most valuable players from both teams were picked by the referee of the game and Jill McMenemy took the honors. The whole team played well and had an excellent tournament. Team members for’this tournament were: Cheryl and Carla Jenkins, Angela Orticello, Christine Hohendorf, Jill McMenemy, Courtney O’Brien, Danielle Cary, Louise Hatton, Danay Guignard, Tracey Andrews, Kate Blyth, Marci Roy, Danielle Castiglione, Jennifer Vidler, Kathy Shier, Paula Hardy. The Hornets next tourna- ment is a Etobicoke next weekend at Centennial Park. August 10 saw the Halton Green team and Halton Blue team meet at Acton High School. Blue team scored early and it took Green team most of the first half to tie the score on a goal from Marci Roy. The second half saw Kate Blyth score and Marci Roy added two more goals for her hat trick. Green team took the game 4-1 over Blue. It was Blue team’s turn for player shortage this week. also on Aug. 10, Halton Red team hosted Milton at Cedarvale Park. Halton Red took the game 4-0 with two goals from Cindy Wilson and two goals from Stephanie O’Brien. Tense playoff action at Prospect Park By Ellen Piehl The Acton’ Denny’s Insurance Mosquito baseball team (as of press time) was tied with the Acton Lions Club in a three game play-off series after losing 6-5 on Tuesday evening at Prospect Denny’s led the series by one after winning the first game 23-1 the night before. They were hoping to do the same in the second game, but the Lions Club had other plans. The Lion’s Club took a three-run lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Denny’s cut their lead to two runs in the second when Dave Albano singled into Centre field to bring in Craig Lockwood from third base. Jeff Cole brought in Albano from third moments later of a routine groundout. Denny’s tied it up at three in the third when Joey McGrath stole home on a wild pitch. Denny’s went ahead 5-4 in the sixth on another wild pitch. This time it was Lockwood who recorded the run. This was the first and only time in the entire game that Denny’s had taken the lead. Their one-run lead was short lived, though, as the Lions Club scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game. David Wells also con- tributed a run in Denny’s one run loss Chris Near drove in start- ing pitcher, Joey Thompson from third base with a single into right field, giving Denny’s a 1-0 lead. Denny’s went up 2-0 short- ly thereafter when Darren Selihar brought Near in from third on a routine groundout. At the end of the inning, Denny’s led 6-0. At this point, Denny’s pret- ty well had the game under their control. Denny’s offense continued to explode in the third. They scored another six runs to give themselves a 19 tun lead. The Lions Club finally got their only run in the fourth when a runner from third scored on a wild pitch. Denny’s then scored an additional three runs. in the bottom of the inning: to win by 22.
