Some of the things that turned up are-just amazing. I was not aware that all black avocados are from California and all green avo- cados are from Florida — or is it the other way around? How can they continue to grow and sell seedless grapes? No seeds — get it! Pretty soon — no seeds — no grapes! Better stock up! And how about oranges with their navels exposed? You would think someone would be employed to put a tape over those navels. Just like how they close all the eyes on the sardines right before they put the lid on the can. And now, moving on to the meat department. Did you ever notice that the fatty part of any cut of meat is on the down side, all hidden away in the packaging? Tut! Tut! And then there is the greatest deceiver of all. That gorgeous, so round, so firm, so fully packed ham contains bones that could have come from a dinosaur! Or how about the gentleman that tells me that the butchers don't hang and age the beef near long enough today. How long should it be hung and aged, I naively ask - “until it drops!” Good Lord! Or how about the butcher Outatthe Ranch that just hates BBQers. He cuts a beauti- ful sirloin 1 2 inches thick at one end with $3.00 worth of ham- burger because she can't get her KGS lined up with her LBS! And then there is that mean chore of returning empty drink bottles! Enough said! Incidentally, have you ever wondered why some markets have the plastic bag handles at each end of the bag rather than in the mid- dle, on-each side of the bag? Okay — are we about ready to check out? We have all our gorgeous goodies — and away we go! Hang on — not that check out - there is a party trying to cash a cheque with no store ID card. Here — this looks like a good one. No - the cashier has just made her third call for a price check. That done — we now head for that demolition derby that is laughingly referred to as the parking lot. No - I refuse to be drawn into a dis- cussion on the driving habits of the public. Maybe another time. In the meantime, it i$ windy out here so secure that empty shopping cart before it destroys the shiney door on somebody's:new Hupmobile! See you at the market!
