Citing landfills is explored By Oksana Buhel The topic of how to cite a landfill facility was explored by Dr. Peter Sandman at Monday’s Credit Valley Coalition (CVC) meeting at the Huttonville Public School,. Citing of a landfill facili- ty has been a contentious issue since the Interim Waste Authority (IWA), began it’s site selection Process in the Regions of Peel, York and Durham. Although Halton Region has been excluded from the Process, three of the pro- Posed Peel locations closely border Halton Hills. Sandman maintained the IWA citing process was wrong because it was coer- cive. “The process has to be voluntary,” he insisted. Sandman insisted citizens’ groups will win the battle against IWA, but the groups must offer an alter- native citing process. He added if citizens’ groups stick together and continue with the process, it will be highly unlikely IWA will select their proposed areas. “Dr. Sandman’s speech was very, very interesting,” said Diana Pooke, CVC executive member. The CVC worked with Durham and York Regional coali- tions to arrange the lecture. Eight other experts will, and have been, speaking on citing-related issues rang- ing from ethical concerns to technical matters. The teports of these experts will be amalgamated into one large report which, Pooke says will be available by the end of September. The Terry Fox Run Sunday Sept. 19, 1993
