Halton girls excel at soccer playoff By June Roy Joint Acton/Georgetown Girls Soccer teams (referred “to as Halton) played in an Inter-County Teamue called at 9 a.m. with the Under-17 teams playing their knock- out rounds. In these open- ers, Brampton “A” defeated Milton 6-4. Brampton | “B” defeated the North 1-Halt Soccer League This league was-made up of teams from’ Halton, Bolton, Brampton, Streetsville/Méadowvale and Milton. The League chose a tournament playoff format this year rather than knockout games scheduled in various towns leading up to the finals. This way, all 18 teams from the three age divisions, playing in this league could participate and also cheer for their other home teams * The “Edelweiss Field Complex” in Bolton was the site chosen for this year’s finals. Games began Meadowvale 3-2, the Halton “B” (Blue Team) took out 2nd place Halton “A” (Food City) team in a surprising upset 3-1 and the Halton “C” (Green Team) gota “by” nie finishing first in the leagu At ll am., | the Under-15 teams played. The first and second place teams got a “by” in this age division and the four remaining teams met in the knock-out round. Halton’s (Georgetown Opti-Mrs.) team got a “by” for placing second in the league. Under-17’s Halton “C” Final Four clash in GMFFL action By Colin Gibson To borrow from an Agatha Christie novel — and then there were four. Four teams, that is, remaining in the hunt for the 1993 Georgetown Mens Flag Football League champi- onship. Last Sunday in opening round playoff matches, M&M Pro Sports disposed of Muscle Pit 38-0, while Meznic Electric shunted Plus Welding to the side- lines with a Hoan con- troversial 21-11 wi M&M 38 Pit 0 Muscle Pit played the first half with only seven players and M&M showed little sympathy in steamrolling to The. ‘eventual winners enjoyed a 17-0 half-time lead then rolled for 22 more second half points en route to the lopsided win. -The win might best be credited to Richard Garden and Mike Henderson. Garden counted 13 points and an interception, while Henderson had two touch- downs and_an interception. Henderson’s scoring antics were the more spec- tacular. He scored one TD on a 70-yard kickoff return and the other on a 60-yard pass and run effort after a toss from QB Stacey Brown. Carlos Pereira and John Proudfoot scored the other M&M majors, while Mark McKeon counted a two- point convert. Horace Thomas also had an interception for M&M. -M squad now has the dubious honor of taking on the league’s regular sea- son champion Longhorns in a 10 a.m. game at GDHS. Meznic 21 Plus Welding 11 Meznic won the game quite handily, but Plus Welding lodged a protest Men’s Flag Football because of the referees deci- sion to allow a questionable touchdown late in the first half to stand. At a league meeting, the touchdown was nullified (which would have given Meznic a 28-11 win) but the eave result was allowed to and. ae in the first half, Meznic QB Hal Hulme rum- bled in to score from within the 10-yard line. The referee allowed the TD to stand because he ruled he had not warned Hulme the play was starting within the restricted * 10-yard zone. The league ruled that since the 10-yard restriction zone (quarterbacks can’t run with the ball within 10 yards of the. opponents end zone) was in the league rule book, a referee’s warning was only a courtesy and the score was wiped out. At that point, Meznic was leading 8-3 and that was how things stood at the half. Meznic upped the score to 21-3 before Plus Welding scored a late game touch- down and two-point con- vert. For Meznic, Gary Lockwood, Hal Hulme and Stu Lunn scored majors with Dale Mieczaniec get- ting three points on two converts and a missed field oal. For the apparently star- crossed: Plus Welding crew, Brad Miller scored a touch- down, Darryl Weir blasted through a field goal and Jeff Wood ‘had:a two-point con- vert. Meznic now gets to meet the second place regular season finishing Dawgs (defending league champi- ons) in an 11:30 a.m. semi final tilt at GDHS. (Green) met Brampton “A” at 1 p.m. in the semi-final round. Halton “C” jumped to an early 3-1 lead by half time. However, Brampton “A” came back strongly in the second half to tie the game. The game remained a closely fought contest until late in the half, when Halton “C” found the net three more times to win 6- 3. Halton “B” (Blue) forced third place Brampton “B” into overtime and pulled another upset by winning the game 5-3. At . p.m., the U-19 Halton team (Personal Secretarial Services - Pat Hatch) played Milton and won handily 9-0.
