The evening will be enriching for their students . and their parents, and will be entertaining for local music enthusiasts. The teachers have imposed this challenge upon themselves and are looking forward to the opportunity to perform for the community. In Halton region, the Police may not have trouble yet keeping in touch with their patrol cars. But they are having prob- lems reaching officers who rely on hand held radios when they. get out of their cars in order to patrol shop- Ping centres or high-rise partments. Police communications manager Staff-Sgt. Dave Denton says that’s because the police radio system, installed in 1978, is inade- quate for the region’s new style of community-based Policing. “Tt hasn’t kept up with the operational requirements,” he says. The system is also starting to wear out and new Parts may not always be available. Denton says police want to install a new, high-tech system that could be linked with the radio systems of the fire departments and the public works departments in each of Halton’s four municipalities. An integrated system would.help police respond in emergency situations, Denton says. Under the cur- Tent system, police and fire officials would have to rely on the telephone or on set- ting up their communica- tions posts next to each other in a major emergency. With the number of air- planes overhead and refiner- ies in the area, Halton should be prepared for emergencies, Denton says. Police will be describing a proposed new region-wide trunked radio system at Halton regional council tomorrow and expect to back before council on Oct. 20 to ask for funding. On its own, a new police radio system would cost $8.5 million. An additional $3.5 million would put fire and public works on the same system, > Denton says this is much less than it would cost to supply radio systems sepa- Tately to each emergency ervice. g The municipalities have shown an interest in an inte- grated radio system, he says. They wouldn’t have to link up right away, but if they are interested in joining the police radio system in the net five years, radio fre- quencies will have to be reserved for them, yo: GET YOUR PARTY BREWING WITH HOWLING FAVORITES FROM ur AND Al Your Hallowe'en Headquarters Let your ghostly guests bop ‘til they drop amidst a wide variety of Hallowe'en balloons and party supplies.
