But they are having prob- lems reaching officers who rely on hand held radios when they. get out of their cars in order to patrol shop- Ping centres or high-rise partments. Police communications manager Staff-Sgt. Dave Denton says that’s because the police radio system, installed in 1978, is inade- quate for the region’s new style of community-based Policing. “Tt hasn’t kept up with the operational requirements,” he says. Denton says police want to install a new, high-tech system that could be linked with the radio systems of the fire departments and the public works departments in each of Halton’s four municipalities. An integrated system would.help police respond in emergency situations, Denton says. With the number of air- planes overhead and refiner- ies in the area, Halton should be prepared for emergencies, Denton says. Police will be describing a proposed new region-wide trunked radio system at Halton regional council tomorrow and expect to back before council on Oct. 20 to ask for funding. On its own, a new police radio system would cost $8.5 million.
