Melisaa Gervais (left) and Michelle Melhuish Sh challenged the odds and tried out for Oakville’s White Oaks junior football team. That is, try out for a boys athletic team. Well, not only did they try out, one of them has made the am. Michelle Meluish, 15 has made the Oakville White Oaks junior football team as a second string defensive back making her one of only a handful of girls in recent memory to play high school football in Halton region. “We actually had three girls trying out a the begin- Al Tanner. “One girl dropped out after the contact started and Melissa Gervais, 13 didn’t have the skill level. ~ But she will try again next year because she has a few years left of junior.” Tanner says that both Gervais and Meluish were not given a hard time by the other players on the team. “(The players) were quite receptive to the girls. They may have been wondering about the contact and there was some skepticism, but once the girls showed what they could do, there wasn’t a problem, “said Tanner. “T’ve been working hard all summer and I think I’ve got a pretty good attitude,” said Meluish. “But right now I’m in alot of pain.” She offered this insight after a tough practice session. “What makes it a little eas- ier is the guys on the team are really supportive.” The pain aspect is a bit of concern to Tanner who feels that safety is obviously a con- cer. “T think it’s easier and safer to play junior than it would be senior because the skill level and the size is smaller. Also, there are*limited posi- tions girls can play in foot- ball. But I wouldn’t keep Michelle if I didn’t think she could play.” added Tanner. Coaches for both the GDHS Rebels junior and senior football teams can’t recall a female trying out for their squads, but insist there are no barriers preventing females from trying to make the teams.
