To the Editor: : This election campaign has been characterized by. immense voter cynicism and disdain for any activity remotely associated with “politics”. I for one want to fact make our political sys- tem work at election time, without whom it would be even less democratic and more elitist. To the people who can- vass their neighbors on behalf of a candidate, to those who hammer up lawn signs, offer rides to the polls, stuff envelopes, and yes, give a modest financial contribution to their candi- date’s organization: I say keep the faith. Don’t let our collective anger get you down. Without the local poll cap- Liberal minority no solution To the Editor: I wonder how many peo- ple who intend to vote Liberal have considered the long term consequences of a minority Liberal govern- ment for Canada. Mr. Chretien has said that in the case of a minority, he would ask the Bloc Quebecois to hold the balance of power. Within two years there - would be a provincial elec- tion in Quebec and as the figures stand, the Party Quebecois would regain power. They are committed to separate and intend to assume 18 per cent of the debt, although they have 25 per cent of the population. With a separatist party holding the balance of power, Quebec will be able to separate, and make any Scare tactics deplored To the Editor: The PC party is in a panic. Judging by their TV commercials, their guns are aimed at the Reform Party. Thesé slick, high priced ads are, of course, aimed. at seniors and I, as.a senior, resent the kind of manipula- tion they are practicing. I believe it’s called “fear mongering”. “Vote Reform and your pensions will disappear” is what they tell us. This kind of prevaricating harks back Election volunteers praised tains and committee room staffers, our campaigns would’be truly cynical: run totally by poll and computer from Ottawa on behalf of and for those at the top. Secondly, I’ve “heard” about the “new politics of inclusion” and I’ve “seen” it in ads employing a per- sonal attack focussing on a facial deformity. I’ve “heard” about “real reform” and “seen” it in a party that must oust a candidate because of his racial attacks on others. I’ve also “heard” about balancing hope and dignity of the individual with economic reality from another party. I’m support- ing that party. I’m voting liberal. David Steckley Acton. demands, financial, territor- ial (you name it) and no one will have the power to say “no”. The avowed intent of the Provincial P.Q. and the Federal B.Q. is to separate this country and the Liberals, with a minority government are unlikely to ut up any opposition because the Bloc will vote against them and bring down the government. Under the parliamentary reforms suggested by the Reform Party, the Bloc Quebecois would not have the power to bring down the Canadian government when they represent only one province. (Mrs.) Ann McKay Campbeliville To the Editor: I’ve lived in Georgetown a lifetime and-I worked 40 years at the Alliance-Domtar Mill This is the first letter sna I’ve written to the edi- T went to an Open House that was supposed to be a sentation of the results of a public opinion survey an ethod to be.adopted by the C.V.C.A. to repair the Barber Dam. Well, the C.V.A.C. consultant didn’t have much to say about deal- ing with the dam in a way in which we could keep the headpond, other than to admit that it could be done. Then the -C.A spokesman got up and said what he knew he was going to tell us long before the sur- vey. He’s going to drain the to last fall’s referendum hype. Remember? “Vote no and our coun: will disin- tegrate”, el adpond ntly. Could we © please just stick Then the anti-dump to the issues, Mrs. got up and argued that if ss Campbell? Must we sink to discrediting the others in order to attract voters? Are you that bankrupt that you cannot convince us by your platform and policies, or are scare tactics all you have left? headpond is kept, there will be a dump-at No. 17 Sideroad and the County Line because the fish can’t get past the dam. Then the Isaac Walton person spoke and said that all 350 of the Isaac Walton people support removing the headpond. Well, the fact is that the fish are going past the dam Luce Coster Belfountain now, even without.a fish- way. Because it sort of came out that the C.V.C.A. had to put in an expensive fish bar- rier at Inglewood to stop them from going further upstream and ruining the sport fishery at the Cataract. And do those 350 mem- bers of Isaac Walton. live in Georgetown? Do they know about the historic past and the beauty of this site as:the water from the headpond comes over the dam? Do they even care? Or did they just endorse a wide sweeping policy statement of that organization’ If the people of Georgetown do not speak up, the C.V.C.A. is going to drain away our past and diminish our heritage all iv the guise of ecology There has to be a serious ompromise here. This dam established Georgetown. It being there led to the amo and the historic first in the world long distance transmission of hydro power historical site, which in any other community would have long ago been developed into a significant park. How can the survey person say g 3 Bib, : : Barber Dam site should be a park that 89 per cent of the people want a park at this site, and then use this survey to destroy the historical integri- ty that the park. would com- memorate and to destroy the beauty of the would-be park site? Other towns have old-mill ponds. Acton has Fairy Lake. Even Campbellville has a pond. We’re all too quick to listen to others telling us to forsake our her- itage. We can have a headpond and the fish.can have a fish- way. Maybe they all won’t get upstream, but even now enough are getting up to need a fish barrier. I’m sorry that draining the headpond made into an argu- ment against the dump. I’m against the dump too. I guess most of the people in Georgetown are. I’m for a river with fish in it too. And I’m also in favor of retaining the headpond with a fishway on the dam to pre- serve the historical integrity and the beauty of this site. I saw a lot of people I recog- nized at that Open House who feel this. way too. And I hope that our town gets a move on and finally devel- ops it as a park. John J.
