Rebels drubbed in showdown By Mike Zrostek With first place on the | line in the Halton senior boys volleyball Richardson division, the Georgetown District ‘High School Rebels didn’t rise to the challenge, dropping three straight to MM. Robinson, in their last regular season match Tuesday at GDHS. GDHS, 5-0 heading into the match, just couldn’t exe- cute key plays and just weren’t mentally into it los- ing 15-13, 15-2 and 15-12 against a tough M.M. team. “Tt'was world class lousi- ness, it was a product of ineptitude,” said coach Bob McKay describing the play of the Rebels on this day. The opener was a close affair, despite the Rebels missing key passes and shots into the M.M. end, despite getting off to a quick 4-1 lead. Matt Johnson and Matt Deruchie had some beautiful spikes on nice set ups from center Matt Brain, but too often, the shots went into the net or were. long. From there, the teams exchanged points on some eeeas rallies making it 10-10, before M.M. scored two sue one to give them a 12-10 le The Riss scratched back to tie it before the mental mistakes kicked in with GDHS players twice serving the ball into the net with the score tied at 12 and o It was the sixth and sev- enth times they hit the net on the serve in the opener and McKay wasn’t happy about that, pulling both players after their serves. “A crucial situation like that and we serve it into the net, I was hotter than a fire- cracker,” said McKay. M™. scored the final two points on some. great ball movement in their own end to take the opener, which appeared to take the wind out of the Rebels who never rebounded. GDHS got into-a hole early in the second game as M.M. raced to a-9-0 lead and never looked back. GDHS were continually out of position as M.M. put the ball precisely where the Rebels weren’t . went on to win the second game handily and an improved GDHS squad made the third game close. McKay and the team aren’t going to dwell over the loss however. “We’ll use it as a tool, we’re not going to make a big deal out of it. It’s the start of a new season now and I think it’s a blessing that this type of game hap- pened now,” said trhe Rebel coach. McKay credited M.M. with playing smart volley- ball and teaching the Rebels a good lesson.
