Community vigil against violence All residents are invited to a community vigil this Monday, 7:30 p.m. at St. George’s ‘Anglican Church, to remember victims of vio- lence. It was four years ago on that date that 14 women were murdered in Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique. This year, people in cities and towns across Canada will gather to commemorate those women, and all victims and survivors of violence. “We're calling it a service of remembrance, and of commitment to change and transformation” says Linn Kingston, who helped orga- nize the service with women from three local churches: St. George’s, St. John’s United and Holy Cross. Through readings, prayers, singing and silent medita- tion, those present will be able to ponder the theme, “First We Mourn, and Then We Work for Change.” They will also light can- dies in memory of the women of Montreal and other victims of violence, some to be named aloud, “others named silently in our hearts.” Organizers point to recent news reports that half the women in Canada say they have been assaulted at some time in their lives.
