Description
In the centre of the building is the old Burling building which has now been demolished. The top of the old town hall can be seen towards the left of the picture. The white extension with windows near the centre of the picture is the back of the old Gowland house, now demolished and replaced with the TD Canada Trust Building. At the extreme left of the picture is the entrance of what was Quality Greens but is now the Rustic Pear furniture store. At the right is the building which was originally used by Dr. Peter Stuart and Dr. Gowland for horses and cars. It was demolished.
Notes
Notes by Jack Charlton. 'Background - Gordon MacNab and Son - furniture store and funeral parlour at rear. Corner of Main and Charles St. Removed in the late 1960's by the town. The main store wall was bulging severely and the cost to repair it in excess of worth. At the right - A horse barn, later garage used by Dr. M. E. Gowland and earlier by Dr. Peter Stuart, also it may have been built by Henry Huffman, Milton's first land developer. Foreground - The original brick store built by George Smith and then leased to John M. Bastedo 1887. On the top of that section is the tower of the old town hall repaced in 1953 as the belfry was too costly to repair. The brick store was later purchased by the Metropolitan Bank, later the Bank of Nova Scotia. The frame two storey store next west was purchased by the bank from the Middleton family then demolished and the present bank reconstructed in 1964. The most westerly part of the property was purchased by Michael Ledwith who extended his store about 1960.'
