- Description
- There is no explanation as to why this photo is in the Wilkinson-Norton album but it is family legend that one of Clarissa Simons’ cousins fought in the American Civil war.
The uniform indicates this soldier held the rank of Brigadier General in the Union Army.
As of March 2019, General Gouveneur Kemble Warren has been identified, thanks to a family descendent. His career started at age 16 when he enrolled in the United States Military Academy. He started as a a brevet second lieutenant in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. Before and after the Civil War, he worked on transcontinental railroad surveys and mapping, which required extensive explorations of the vast Nebraska Territory, including Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Montana,Wyoming and lastly, Rhode Island.
General Warren was Chief Engineer of the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg, commanding V Corps in 1863-1865.
General Warren is buried in the Island Cemetery in Newport, Rhode Island.
His connection with the families of Trafalgar Township in Ontario remains a mystery. - Notes
