Description
"Dr. John Urquhart was a self educated man who settled in Oakville when the village, as a port of entry, was affected by a world-wide cholera outbreak. The Government built a hospital on the west side of the river, and he was placed in charge...After two year's experience among cholera victims at York and Oakville, John Urquhart became qualified to practice medicine. He opened a combined apothecary's shop, surgery and dwelling on what is now Lakeshore Road between George and Thomas Streets. In this building in 1844 was born his son, John, who also became a doctor and served two terms as mayor of Oakville."
