- A cabestan is a wooden winch used to manually haul a boat onto a beach. Two long wooden poles are inserted into holes in the vertical post. Groups of people push and pull the poles clockwise while another person winds the cable from the boat.
To the right of the photograph is a caloge, a small house made from an old boat covered with a roof. The caloge is a traditional Upper Normandy structure containing fishing equipment and usually found on the beach.
Étretat is a small seaside town flanked by dramatic chalk cliffs about 26 kilometres north of Le Havre on the Upper Normandy coast. It was the location of a British General Base Hospital for five years during World War I.
