Baily Mrs. Baily and family came to Stewarttown in 1908. Forty-five years before this was written. She writes, "I am standing at the railway crossing on the 7th Line and we will come south from there. The first farm is the Bessey farm. Mrs. Bessey had a hop yard there and buildings for drying and curing the hops. In the spring several women from the village would go and tie up the hop vines. In the Fall we took the children and went to pick hops. Another family of Besseys lived on the 6th Line. They had a large family, these and the Herb Besseys, living with Mr. Bessey Sr. All went to the stone school (corner of the 7lh Line and Limehouse road). One winter evening two Bessey girls were getting a ride with Mr. Bob Wright of Ashgrove. It was snowing heavily and the cutter was struck by the train. Mr. Wright was killed and Mildred Bessey badly hurt. Next farm was the Devereaux farm. Mr. John Devereaux still lives there. Across from the Bessey farm was the McAipine home. Mr. McAlpine's mother lived with them. Belle McAlpine was quite a character. The Hickens moved into this house. They were noted for their roses. Crossing the Hamilton - Allandale line there was a small house on the east corner where Jack McConnell lived alone, he was a bachelor. Later he moved to Stewarttown. The Allan Devereaux's lived on the Check Line. He kept fine horses. The Chris Nixon's had a farm on the left side. The Jenkinsons first home was on this farm. Mr. Jenkinson died the same day as Mr. John Appelbe. There were two Harrison brothers and a sister living where Col. Brown and the Barnes lived across the road (Golf Links now).
