accounts of spring wheat are equally good excepting for the north and northeastern counties where its growth was checked by the drokt of june bat even in these districts it promises a fair yield while in the lake ontario west midland georgian bav and lake huron counties it is reported to be better than for many years it will be folly ripe about the middle of the month and with a continu ance of the two hours delay reached the privy council by an accident there was no quorum hon- john carting would have pushed it through at that sitting the delay enabled the temperance people to present their counter petition the neit day they were astonish ed at the governments wonderful activity aud asked three weeks grace to prepare evidence this was refused but two weeks were granted kext the matter again submitted this puts the temperance party at a disadvantage toronto kou the voting on the repeal of the scott act in halton will do much good- it wol in a great measure settle the fate of the scott act in ontario if the people of halton decide to repeal the act it will show that they having had experience of the working of prohibition hare been forced to the conclusion that it is a mistake if the act be sustained that fact wilt carry with it the conviction that prohibition in halton has been found to work well that it has lessened drunkenness and that it is there fore a desirable law there are no two opinions about drunkenness that it is an evil all admit nobody defends drunken ness the drunkard himself hiccups out warning totiie young to shun the cup that has brought him to misery wretchedness and want hamilton spectator according to the ruling of the ottawa authorities a petition for another vote may be got up in a county the day after the scott acf has been carried and that peti tion may be acted on if the requisite num ber of signatures is secured it is evident that in this way a continued process of agitation and worry may be kept up tih- the supporters of the act are so wearied out and disgusted as to give up the whole thing in despair such may be the intention in this new dodge but it is just possible that the result may be very different from whatr the licensed victuallers and their friends anticipate toronto glee this puzzles us opponents of the scott act say that ii is inoperative where it has been passed as in halton yet these same people are agitating for its repeal do they wish it repealed because it is in operative or because they are opposed to the sale of liquor london adcerlutr communications wbflt tt an willlnf repeal of the scott act in salton and the election is announced to take place some time about the middle of september the public must not presume that the opposition of the supporters of thescott act to the repeal petition is any evidence that they feared the act- would not be sus tained in case a vote was taken upon it such was- emphatically not the cause of opposition- the desire of the scott act party was to endeavor to set aside a petition of a most unfair and illegal character a petition the majority of whose names were secured over two years ago and before the art hadtseen in operation three months a petitiok cohtaining names of many men who had been dead for nearly two years a petition containing names cf men who were not on the voters list of 1832 1683 or 184 a petition containing names of men s not voters and never were voters ja petition containing names of men who eigned it ou the representation that it was to amend the act instead of to repeal it a petition containing names of men who have told us personally that they never signed the petition nor authorized any one to sign it for them this opposition on the part of the supporters of the act was not a selfish ne it was not only ah endeavor to secure justice for themselves but to save other counties similarly situated from fu ture injustice of the same nature but their effoftghave proved futile- through the mterference and insnence of certain taincabinet ministers and senators per sonally interested in the success and con- tinoapceof the liquor traffic the prayer of the petition has been granted the raetf who havefhe best moral social and spiritual interests of the residents of this county at heart are however in no wise dismayed by the turn matters have taken ithasnotcomeuneipectedly ever section of the county has been thoroughly organ- ized for some time and the officers of the association are now actively engaged m the wots of the campaign there is no reason whatever to fear the result of this election the scott act will undoubtedly be sustained by a largely increased ma- v j the only enemies- the act has are the whiskey nen whose traffic fattens on the ruin of homes business and the souls of men- to these may be added of coarse thosewhom they and their friends may in- noence but- it is very evident that no money or labor will be spared to secure the defeat of the act in halton and those who are opposed to the measure have both money and men in abundance in fact the whole farce of the liquor interest will be brought to hear upon- this contest as if it were the very key of the position how- evef at this point the question arises will thurge amount of money reported to be at the command of the opponents of the act materially change the result there is do doubt money was freely used fay thk party in the last contest and we feel satis fied that nearly every man wlio was so lost to any sene o right as to sell himgelf to the whiskey party was purchased then and the gain to be made from this course on thepresent occasion must be very limit ed indeed heyerthetess- notwithstanding the fact that everything points to a result most favorable tothe scott act in resolution ahows what thorough work they intend to make of it it was unanimously agreed that whereas there is a general desire for the submission of the scott act in this county and whereas this
