ii i nt muzz s t 5 hr- i as f-lft-vs- k t i atmss xvf a thtjmdit moblasirt 18 1884 f the pwaent situation i r kow thfct the scott- act hi uii been tauxaed iod that by a urge inireed majority leaving no reasonable probability thai tioenae lav will ever araiflbe reinttad la or oottnty behooves thoee interested in the hotel busineea toaettje upou tome feasible and aatufatory plan of conducting their baainesa tipon a fair paying basis in future untfluie election last wekstroa hopes irere ootettaiuedby these people that when the repeal vow was taken upon this question the boott act would be over thrown and they would again be allowed the privilege ofhreopening under the old license regulations in this they have been disappointed kow a number o these men are owners of hotel property and as they say it will not pay them to conduct the business without the sale of liquor at the old rates and it certainly will not pay them to lock their doors some arrangement must be affected for conducting their business upon a different plan in the first place the hotel keepers moat make up their minds to forget the past ob serve the law and conclude to treat the public civilly and respectfully ifc they do this they will succeed in winning the-sym- ptthy and support qf all right thinking people whether they were opponents or friends in the fate contest in the matter of iccommoditiou consid erable careful investigation is necessary from the first the hotelkeepers have acted upon unbosinesslike principles by prov for the public open sheds free of charge all these years they were in no way called upon to do this and the public should never have been educated to expect it in fact very few places outside of haltan ever provided free sheds kow these sheda should be properly pnrlnsm and a nominal fee charged or the use of them for if they are an accommodation the public should certainly feel called upon to pay what such ccommodation is worth to them- again if it has been found that the charges made in the past for meals dx for man and beast have been insufficient and failed to return a reasonable profit without the ex penditore of money in the bar then it will be perfectly in order and quittf right for these charges to be raised toa lair and paying rate to this n3ne who give the natter a thought can abject for it is cer tainly just that every man receiving to t the hands of the hotel- keepers should pay the full value for the i same and not expect some other person to pay a part of his just rates by spending money for liquor in which he receives no possible value- it only remains with the men engaged in the business referred to to lay aside their injured feelings show that they are dis posed to respect the law and treat the public with courtesy by so doing they wulundouhtedlypommand and receive the respect of all and none will be more ready to assist them hn the temperance people if however they continue to engender bitter feelings and malign and insult those whom they- hare sop- ported the scott act they will not only in- jure themselves financially but will estrange themselves alike- from friend and opponent the business of hotel keeping is as hon orble a one as any in the land solong as the hotelkeeper is not a wlaskey seller it is only the bar that the people of this county object to jagainst the bar and the bar only we have strenouily fought but wehave done so from principle and for what we considered was for the very best interests of the people in every sense of the term and not from any selfish or pecuniary consideration or turbulent propenmties now that the battle is over and the matter permanently settled we desire to show ourselves ready and willing to assist in placing the business referred to in a posi tion especially satisfactory to the people who have been relieved of the dangerous portion of that business we are prepared to malte public any suggestion in the interests of tnesemen and will do all in our power to assist in arranging matters mutually agreeable to the hotelkeepers and flttrmbiic hotels are necessary and can be md financiallj successful even without being accompanied by the liquor business the majority of the present hotels in the county are necessary and are more suited to that business than to any other therefore with a fair increase jfe rates and a civil bearing towards all we seehefore those who exert themselves as all business men who succeed must a satisfactory future a future untrammelled by the corse and misery of sr licensed whiskey traffic and a- fhtore in which the hotelkseper w2t be an honored and respected member orsocietyv haivroirs victory the significance- placed uon it by the out- ttte wotht halton people are in favor of regulating the uquor business out of existence berlin keict the fight was a bitter one and the tem perance people claim a great victory markham economiil the scott act has a warm place in the hearts of a respectable majority of the people of halton brampton banner it is looked upon not only as county victory where it has been thoroughly tested but as a grand dominion victory bramp ton tina this we believe virtually settles the matter for ontario and the act will carry in almost every place whereiubmitted tara leader this is a signal victory for the temper ance cause and will no doubt help the temperance workers in all parts of the province durham review neither party can claim that the senti ments of the county haw not been express ed and the verdict of the people will be a strong point in other localities pari re view the friends of the scott act have cause for rejoicing over the victory achieved in halton yesterday they fought a vigorous campaign against thorooyerganized op ponents globe v after a thorough trial the people of hal ton have decided in favor of the act by giving a majority of 175 and this when nearly twice as many votes were polled than in i88l ahnston fair pfay this will give encouragement to the scott act friends in huron and bruce as it is full proof of the falsehoods circulated by the opponents of the act as to the feelings i the halton people lvcbune sentinel now that it has been carried again in halton after a fair fight the wore of sub mitting it in other counties will doubtless be earned on with fresh vigour and a com bined assault made on the uquor traffic all along the line berlix telegraph the liquor interests pat their best and strongest forces forward in a compact terri tory and were defeated which fact shows conclusively that the majority of people in halton are in favor of the continuation of the scott act toronto world the president of the peel association hit sent to halton a message that well expresses the desire and determination of all the sutjonndinglconnties hold the fort pit we are coming a from the ballot boxes of halton next tuesday will echo back a ringing chorus by gods grace we wltoronlo cxn and hey did all honor to the good men aad time of our grand old county the following resolution was passed by the temperance electoral aasociatrou of toronto lastweek that the recent tn- stanceiof persistent violation of the license 2am of the province and the dominion is a direct call to the temperance people of this- cv to take steps without further delay to protest against the iniquifcyof the liquor tnffic by sach means as ipratenr twod be ittherefore resolved that steps be jttjoocf 2aiq submit the twt act in the temperance party is exultant over uaeir splendid victory and the liquor deal- ers should also be jubilant as they claim there is more liquor drank where prohibi tion is in force than where license prevails it is a really good thing that works both ways siagara folic reviac the contest was a vigorous one and both sides did all that was possible to ensure success it may then be taken for grant ed that the vote was a fell one and it may also be taken for granted that the working of the act is satisfactory to a majority of the peoplp of the county hamilton specta tor when it is taken into consideration that the liquor interest centered all their forces both of men and money in this contest the result can justly be claimed as a triumph for the temperance party the moral effect of this vicinity will greatly strength en the supporters of the act in other coan- ties itatfbnf adcocacc the proof of the pudding is in eating and now that the haltonites have endorsed the act it knocks the wind completely out of the opponents of the act but more es pecially snubs such men as king dodds bell and the notorious jenkins who are mere herelings of the liquor dealers and talk for pay not from principle mount forest confederate when it is taken into ascount that the antiscott act party staked theirall in halton that they moved heaven and earth to defeat the act that material assist ance was obtained from outside and that money was- freely used by the licensed victuallers the friends of the act have reason for congratulation upon the signal victory which they have achieved gall reformer kow that it has been carried in halton after free open and standup fight the work of submitting it in other counties will doubtless be carried on with fresh vigour and a combined assault made on the liquor trade all along the line that is what we have cow to look for and the sooner men make up their minds to it the better for the temperance people are determined not to slacken their work gaelph mercury that the act has been sustained by the people of halton in the face of the very disadvantageous circumstances which at tended its operation is the best possible evidence that can be given of its efficacy nfl usefulness and showh that under more favorable circumstances and by giving it even a reasonably fair show which it has not yet had it can be made prolific of the most beneficial results ii7ri exptuor the act was carried on april 19th isslj by a majority of 81 and ever since the howl of the antiscott party has been give us a chance to cast a repeal vote and well show you- they counted without their hosts however and despite the eloquence of king dodds and every other means used the temperance people stood true to their colors and proved that the working of the act in halton after a trial of three years is satisfactory bruueu pott the cunning of the liquor men has proved most disastrous to themselves had they not forced the contest in halton so as to get a decision before the voting- comes off in the other counties they might have had some ground for asserting that the act had proved a failure bat now that the repeal has been defeated there if no room for any r further argument on that point halton has acted nobly in this case and deserves great praise for the noble stand it has taken on temperance orange vitk advertiser on tuesday last noble little halton held its own against the onslaughts of the com bined liquor interests of ontario in their struggle for right we have been told time after time that when a repeal vote was taken in una county thai the act would be swept out of ftif stance speakers have stood upon the platform and screeched ihemsehes hoarse in suting that the people of hon wew tired ma eioktf the act now that tbe4iqaor party have ipent thousands of dollars in trying to defeat the act what do they thnk of the crushing defeat they have met with the boott act wm discussed from every conceivable standpoint in halton during the past few weeks and nothing teems to be left lor the antii to stand opoo three times three cheers for halton tuaobrg liberal the result of the voting in halton on tuesday shows plainly that the temperance sentiment is growing rapidly and growing- strong in canada every rightthinking man rejoices at this that in the not distant future the trafflo in intoxicating liquors in canada most forever cease every rightthinking man will rejoice when that day comes that those specially in terested in the liquor business jwill do wise ly to consider how best to get ant of it with the least losv pecuniarily to themselves brvunptoikcontervator it u said that the brewers and malsters association set apirt 75000 for the halton campaign we most all admire the heroic stand made by the temperance party against tremendous odds the- other side fought well but didnt call upon god for help when they put their shoulder to the wheel u did the temperance panyi in this strife the result of the contest has inspir ed with hope and uiankiulneesthe temper ance element throughout the ortuftry and has a correspondingiy depreasiing effect upon the other side gtayner sun the vote cast in halton on tuesday last has proved beyond the possibility of doubt that so far as the machinery of the law will permit the people of that county are de termined that the traffic in intoxicating liquors within the bounds of that county shall absolutely cease the result which has been reached habeen jocosely attribut ed to the influence of the women and the parsons but be that as it may the fact is andfiniable thaft fter a free and full dis cussion in which some very able advocates on both sides have taken part a majority of the hardheaded yeomanry of the county have recorded their votes in opposition to repeal of the bylaw by which the boott act is in force whatever we may think of this decision the fact cannot be gainsaid and the unquestionable intelligence and thoroughly representive character of the people of halton lend to this action of theirs additional significance after ample trial of the working of the act they have deliberately decided by a considerable majority that it shall continue in force toronto globe- the desire of the temperance party was to have a simultaneous contest throughout the country so as to intensify the interest and scatter the liquor forces this was met by obtaining from government permis sion for a repeal contest in the county of halton a month in advance of all the others in the hope that by the concentration of men and money on that ootxnty a condem nation of the act might be obtained this with the scattering of the other contests placing the weaker counties first on the list the liquor men doubtless thought might give a result very different from what the temperance people looked for the latter have however never shrunk from challeng ing the full power of the enemy the point has b at last reached at which they have been long aiming where the question has been fought out in the presence of a thoroughly aroused and thoroughly inform ed public opinion the people of halton know what the law is what it can do and what it has not done a larger proportion of votes has probably been polled than ever before and the result is a clear victory for prohibition montreal witness the exhibition toronto industrial sept 10 to 80 ottawa grand dominion saptntp87 hamilton great central fair sept 80 to oct 8 london
