fifty to seventyfive mil we pu throagh as almost oubrokeft belt of good farming land with here and there a bluff until we reach iloosomin where bluffs seem to predominate oyct open prairie in this seventyfive miles we have passed many a flourishing little town and village such as brandon oak lake virden and elkhorn all of which are rapidly le- comiog centres of grain production and trade the coantry from hereon tofiegina a distance of about one hundred miles is not thickly settled and aa we passed throagh during the night both going and coming we could not form an opinion as to the nature or capabilities of the soil we arrived at moose jaw a distance of 821 milea from port arihnr or 400 miles from winnipeg aiusoonsundaymoraing- and here oor locomotion by the iron horse was exchanged for the somewhat slower movement of the bony ox leaving moose jaw on tuesday afternoon july 16th in the company of two settlers from away back we started ou the trail for saska toon a distance of 154 miles north west for a distance of 20 miles widely separated booses were seen some occupied by families a swedish statesman recently- inveighed most eloquently ia parliament against oleo margarine national park and though as yet hut a hamlet on accpanl of its location and beauty it bid3 fair to rival som of the older and more renowned summer resorts it is hemmed in oa almost every side by mountains one of which is about a mile and a quarter high and through the village runs the beautiful bow river spanned by a splendid iron bridge aiaar a clamber over tunnel mountain and a very pleasant canoeride on the bow river we took a drive oat to the devils canjjon where the witer of a creek passes throagh a channel varying from twenty tj birty feet wide the rock oo either side being worked on the level back into the mountain where tbe coal is in seams varying from two to five feet in thickness arid is found lying in a- slanting position between the strata of rock the second is a
