aroand the hotel front and our tarty and dogs came in for a good deal of raillery and gratuitous advice one man thoaght it was ridiculous for perfect greenhorns to go after deer their first hunt with rifles youd orter hev shot guns and buck shot said he and them hounds ringed hounds i call em they aint iocod they wont run deer nary a deer t but they did all the same we finally got away about nine all loj hounes aud the chimney is always a piece of stove pipe thrust up througi tlie roof iu fact this peculiarity in chimneys seems to be the dividing line between uk backwoods aud civilisation vou can al ways tell when approaching a town orjvil- hgc in this region by looking for brick or fitoneehimnevs if you see them lo the ex clusion of the ubiquitous stovepipe lyoe cut be reasonably sure that a town or village is not far off night come on soon after leaving b river within almosj saven miles or to of our journeys end so the driver walkrf ahead of the team with a unteru to look for holes and bad places in the road while phil drove the team the loon and shorty trudged along behind and pbice thtee celts th rest rodo arrived at b- x yanked each other about and the contor tions they went through was simply dread ful if they wanted ti get tlirough a fence for instance one dog would want to jump over the topand theotner was equally deter mined to crawl underneath theyd malce a rush at the fence together and the result was chaos however we were uot many miles on the road- before the climax was reached the dogsin rishing along in he bush got one each sde of a tree neither would give way nor did the tree they gave a mighty tug and the c lain snapped they got- along a good deal hetterafter hat by alternate walking and nding seldom off a walk we reached me z e a sort of- halfway house at ijto and stopped for dinner we found the front axle of the rig badly sprung bo that the wheels grazed the box and its a wonde r the whole concern didnt collapse over su h roads we find a good dinner the piear de raittaace being herrings fresh from tie lake only a few miles away and som fine potatoes pa baid m these are fine large pofatceapwbite elephants i guess thems what they call the lied elephants why they grow so larje hert we have to raise em outer the giound with a hand spike f that settled lit after an hours rest we resumed on journey and tho further we went the hunting while the loon and shorty cnhvenbd the proceedings fith several scngs yujte a nice little crjwd altogether sevcttecn men three women and tome children not to mention several dogs the hous- was a small one and the problem of stowing away twenty adultsw the night seemed a potrle but they did it somehow with thrvc tu a bed and other expedients i wiiixiiv 0t i our first djys hunt and a vcrtiablc red letter day it was uite a sitftt to bm us start off if we olily had had a caukp whit iews we could have brought iwck home even- man oar- ried a winchester with magazine full and an extra lialf dozzu cartridgijs in ills pocket phil couldnt get lunch enough in his pockets bo wore a leather- haversack pa also had a grte bag pa and the loon started off in one direction to pat in the dogs and the rest of us started the other way for the ranway m having half an hours grace the dogs had been let go only a iw minulei when they started ap a fine buck and two does the docs went off by theni- selves and the dogs ran the buck philvas the fira man it approached he heard it coining and got ready it rotted ap about fifty yards from him and halted momen tarily listening for the dogs fie thought first it was a jxiw but then he saw he antlers and blazed away twice at it one shot struck it fair behind the shoalder down went its tail and it ran a few afds and fell the dogs stopped running so we knew the deer was shot and all harried jin the direction of the firing uncle arrived first and asked ifril if he shot the deer aiid where it was phil didnt seem td kniw whether he had or not uncle hunted arouud and soon found it dead as a herring we hung it up cleaned it cut a pole and strung the buck on it and hen came itie tug to carry it out of the bash the buck was heavy and swung on the pole and jit was quite a big job carrying it out we weighed it at the house it scaled consider ably over two hundred pounds and was very fat we learned afterwards that ilwua the biggest back that had been shot onthit part of the peninsula for some time pa was immensely tickled especially over the dogs because they had run so well and the first deer they ever ran was shot in front of them we loaded it on a wagon and sent it by team to u river thence by stage o w there to be hung in the ice house until oar return started oat with the dogs again but didnt nia another raise did very well for the first day settlers say deer are very plentiful here this year anyway there are lots of traciks all oyer this district back home at dusk what with he seductive pipe checkers songs and chat we managed o put in fairly enjoyable evenings- tonight we had an innovation in- the shape of a peripatetic fiddler who is staying around chis settle ment he has a pretty good instrument aud regaled us with jigs reels strathspeys and so forth galore tbxiwiiay oct u tsok a new route down g pood pat the dogs in where they started ap a coaple of fine doer and ran them right down to the lake about three miles we all hustled down as fast as possible to the share phil the loon and shorty reached there together at a place called l p heard thedogsover towards p harbour two of its started along the shore lo intercept the deer should they take othe vatex at that point leaving phil at the bay at ih p u bat of course he wanted sqmething to eat and went over to the fishermans shanties aiid while there the deer doubled on the dozs and took to the water almost at the place where we bad been standing pa and uncle arrived on the shore just in time to see the deer getting out on the shore across the bay oo far off for a shot quite a dis appointment all round as we should have had these doer however couldnt bo helped fortune of war went over to the fishermens shauties to inspect tlie ishiha industry sorry that want of space pre- clades a description of this one of ontarios great industries dogs cot back in the swamp after rabbits couldnt set em cot and had to come home without them arri vine there at dusk usual chat smoke and songs after bupper with humorous reafunjis from coles fun doctor by shorty jfaijuv oct 17 had to go down to iwamp at ltlta to jet dogb oat had been running rabbits all nigh i and still at it by dint of a lot of shoo tine whistling aud no said mccr finnfi we eat two of them out pretty tired fame and hungry had some crab for them and they eagerly snapped it op a most amusiag incident happened ou the road going down to the swamp the loon valued ahead and pa and myself together a little in the rear presently we saw the loon itrike ao attitude motion to ui to halt and railing his gad aim at something near tho side of the road after aiming for what seemed to us to be several mwuyes he fired dashed into tbe boah and presently emerged in ttibippb swiogiux by the tail doadfui wa examined it ft wai dud they ilred nine or hen tbou at itwhucit qofto dead in fact hid been dead for some dayi by t appearance the loon ex plained thai lie saw it carlcd up at tbe foot ofairee and thoafiht it wu lire one asleep h cat off the tail tit trophy the hide being spoilt pa had to go right into the iwtmp to get his dog on i and the rest of oi returneotto the- house and had diooer just as we started out again pai dog came ap so we took all of them with ui to a good place in g roaa found quite a fresh track bat going the wrong way for ui and contrary to all advice the loan would peniit in patting the doga in with the result that tbe deer headed direct for the lake it had far too much i tart for as to try and head it off bo we had to let it go dogs aud all same thing occared again ai yesterday doga put deer in lake and then started after rabbits in the swamp aud stayed oat all night biaio took a walk down to lake a pretty little sheet of water with a pair of twin islands in the centre gravelly bottom water very clear said to be lota of fish in it back at hoase at dusk found pa there chat with old folks reminiscences of theirlife fa auld scotia well informed people have seen better days came from the viaaily of dundee only a few years ajro and have -a- well developed soccnt pas dogretarnei alone at oed time 6ironit oct kptrly separated this morning the loon weat by himself down to the lake to hunt up bis dog oat back of g roidand uncleandlueatdown to k lake about a couple of miles away to head off any deer thatas dog might raise and run irrihat direction we found a paut ou the shore and pal off inthe lake with a paddle each a nice sheet of wtter abouhhrce miles long by half a mile wide well wooded almost to the waters cdie and lots of lass and pike ia it we were weliout towards middle of lake when dog put a deer in the water from opposite shore two boats belonging to a party cmpiagut lake pat after it aud after an exciting chase finally shot it sach tools we never taw before and lha water with hardly a npple thayiclailly fired eleven shots at it and opened firn within fifty yards some of the shots struck the water scarcely a yard from the boat paddied all oyer like and trolled a spoon behind bat couldnt get a bite landed to inspect the camp found only two fellows iu rest out in lake they were quite a large party fourteen of them and eleven dogs had three good roomytents oneeach for eatlne sleeping and cookicc they came from p sound driving tho cotire distance and were mostly taiload men and nice fellows they camp here at thistuae for a month every year found they had shot foardeerwl shot iu like and small ones at that jost fiwns yearlings the lot woaldot weigh two hundred pounds we foand one of our tost does iu their camp and it turned oot that it was oar dogs pat the deer they bad just shot in the lake crossed over and met tbe luoo on the other bhorc with other dog he had found it round the shore uncle and i started borne with dogs aod the loon went for a trollaud succeeded in getting a nice pike had it for supper home aboat dusk fiddler in after supper and several neighboring settlers bad an old-fashioned-loghouse-hoe- downdance presumably in our honour 1 can tell you it was a great perrbrmanoe and we appreciated it one individual farored us with sundry solos on a tin whistle and he really did it remarkably well on that primitive instrument of torture several of the company sang very creditably and the looo and shorty pumped out songs by tbe dozen had quite a bis time all round closed the performance atmidnight with auld ling syne by the entire company some twentyfive all told and drank in pure cold water the old saturday night toast- absent wives and sweethearts god bless them every one our quarters beiuj rather crowded some of us bunked in tbe bay mow and slept very well ecvdiv oct 13 enjoyed little extra morning sleep nearest church some seven odd miles away woald have to walk both ways bo nooe of us went- phil and uncle stayed at home to rest and pa the loon aod shorty went for a walk down to p harbor and l p fishing stations foarld a crew of a fiihing boat skinning a bear in the rocks at the shore it had been shot with a spring gun and the man who got it had bicged three that week in the same way the fiibermeu throw some of the heads and entrails of the fish they catch in a pile on the shore and set a gun with a string attached to the trigger ia sach a way that the bears in coming to feed on tbe ref ase fish stumble iover the string and sc off the eon which shoots tbem they get qoite a nam ber iu the season in this way they also set dead falls and other traps bajted in the same way the bear they were skinning was very fat pa aud the loon secured a paw each at a trophy and a lamp of the fat to grease our boots with oo the road home we met another fisher man setting deadfalls for coon and baiting them with chunks of fish struck us as rather queerbait for an animal like a coon but the fellow said he had caught several with il i arrived back at house about 130 for dinner stayed in all afternoon read ing and sleeping during evening sang several hymns and shorty read one of tal- magea holy land sermons for the edifica tion of the crowd bat his reading seemed to have a rather soporiferous effect as when he finished nearly all bands were sound asleep in their chairs moxdat oct 20 pa roused us all out at 130 packed up all our traps slotgnns except clothes we bad on and rifles and cartridges trunk to be sent by team to b river for thursdays stage took out dogs over the k property soon started up a nice deer and ran it in direction where i was posted saw it at a good dis tance off coming straight for me let it come up within about eighty or ninety yards going at a good speed and theu fired and struck it off the back of the neck ball lodging in the loins the deer tamed at nearly right angles and ran hard fired a couple of rum shots one went through base of ear and other strack it in cheek and out top of its head fell all iu a heap about fifty yards from me iran up held its front legs down aud stuck it bled well i felt quite proud of the feat to have shot the fiiatf deer i ever saw and running at that phil was tbe nearest man to mo and by a lot of whistling and shooting i got him otot to me and we cot a pole slung tbe deer on it and carried it to tho road only a short distance and hang it op on a high too a nice doe weighed a little over 100 lbs c lea oed toga ran several more deer over the ium bat not within shot of any of tit along in tbe afternoon fa and phil vera measuring their property with a lino when a deer jumped upright in front of them remained in range bat couldnt bit it as ftwa jumping around so much over logs and dodging aroand trees tad rocks dogs pat ap a very large back la other side o road from where we were stationed but it ran the other way down to the lake we heard afterwards that it took tbe water nearouoof the fishing stations aod thai one of the men there fired at it with buck- aliot and hit it bat not hard enough to hart ft mdch team came alooa road with oar trips and we loaded deer in to be tent in stage from b liiver to w back at house at dusk bongs and games after sapper two dear so far not bad all things considered ttmoiyoct 21 oat at daybreak take oat two dogs only tbey started rabbit near the house and we losva lot of time get ting them out of the burn they ought ts be led to the banting grbands hat then thats too much trouble for bis honor the master of tbe hounds took np our posi tions aod the loon and uncle put in dogs back of property started up a fine doe near them tbe loon and uocle both blazed away at it but the latter bagged it with a clever shot a nice doe and weighed about one hundred tnd fifty pounds put dogs in again further back and they soon started ap another deer pa and the leon put tbe dogs in this time and they had the satisfaction o shooting the deer the killing of this deer was the- most exciting episode of the whole trip pa and tbe loon blazed away in great shape and fired uot less than seventeen shots at it before they broaght it down tbe deer got in a ttort of gully with pson one side and tbe looo od the other andj then tbey blazed away at the imminent risk of bitting each other pa fired the fatal shot so it wm bis deer after it was badly hit it still kept oo run ning because the doga made it though it fell several times pa hollered to the loon to run after it he did and the way he coursed madly aoujf over tbe rocks atd logs was a caution he fell several limes and barked his shies hart his chin and knocked the nail clean off one of his thumbs and though he nearly fainted from paiu kept bravely ou and at hut reached the deer which the ddgs held at bay prince was standing on a kn with bis front paws on the deer barking right ki its facersd tha loon said when the deer saw him it tried to run again but tbe lbon fired at itagaiu and keeled it over it was a very plamp little beast very nicely shaped maniged to get a passing team aod carted the deer un to corner of lane leading to b house and huog them ap in trees there went ap to dinner pretty good mornings work two nice deer and both shot inside of au hoar in the afternoon took oat one dog only and tried to mike a raise ia the bind hills but the dog wouldnt or couldnt hunt becauie he had rather sore feet tracks all around wilhoat end mast be a lot of deer around here regular padded down paths two and three inches below the burfaca of the ground where they fun aroand the bills there seems to be a regular range of these sand hills some of quite a respectable height they extend up to the very bead qf the peninsala and we were told extend across the ifamtoqnn island and tonne mainland beyond again the deer seem to resort to the neighborhood of these bills at nightfail evidences that they pass the mjjht there were very plentiful back at the house at dusk no songs to-night- the looa nursing his woanrfwl thumb and it was very sore too its no joke to have the nail torn violently and completely off pa declared that he shot it ofi t tbe time they were both shooting at the deer in the gully a daughter of one of the neighbors dropped in for a social chat she was t0k a pretty girl with a nice complexion and rosy cheeks in fact all the girls and young women we have seen up here among the settlers are especially noticeable for the freshneaa aud healthy bloom of their com plexions they all have rosy cheeks and bright eyes and well rounded arms that many an aristocratic townbred woman would sigh for weintsmr oct 22 out last days hunt and i regret to say a blank one took the doga down to the n prop erty they soon got on the track of a large buck add ran it a long way ronnd and finally put it into lake it swam across anjaway out over tbe side which ssttled the question of cefting it as far ag we were concerned it didnt come near any of us as it took a runway that we did not know of started the dogs iu again but couldnt mike another raise so went home for dinner in tba sfternoon took tbe dogs around the sand hills no luck there in crossing over a large jburu a drove of six fine deec got up about foar or five hondred yards ahead of us we blazed away a few shots st them but didnt hit any oo far ofi aud juniping over rocks and logs like a lot of rabbits it was quite a pretty sight to see them moving off tbey looked acd moved so gracefully the does- got after them and three of as pat for the like as hard as we could go we had to take the bay road as being nearer to us and guess phil and the looo covered that three miles and a hlf do am to the lake in quicker lime thin it had ever been covered before or woald be aain goyjdnt make it in tiftie the dos ran lha deer very hard and had them in the water some time before we reached the ihore no trace of them when we arrived lb ere back to the house at supper time fa and shorty went np to the settlement about a couplejuniles after supper to arrange for a tearnito lake us and lha two deer shot yesfenlay to river to catch morninxsjage for aboat phils big back when it arrived in v7 by ttagp tltimau that promised lo look ater it and pot it in to ice houso was away and it laid rod od until it began to spoil then a batcher t lie re who knew phil took charge of it skinned it and saltedl down it was fine boding meat so phil decided to have it spiced abdamoked and sent down to him with thfl hide when done he took the head over to a
