utuuuct thursday evening november 1920 our reason for uie action the question of reporting school bonrd mutters and meefinp has been n vexed orfc it seems for aorny time jn acton memory seems to recall thnt before our troublesome times of tin- past yeur the meetings were not reguliirly reported but a year or jo ngo the trouble was buried whatever it was nnd thl preij press wns invited to nttend nnd report school bonrd proceedings we tried to he faithful to the request but seemingly wc didnt play up the activities ag was done with other bodies maybe wc didn t mttoud all the sessions at any rate at the nominu tlong inpt year wo were charged by a board member wifll not giving full publicity to school matters and fiving tie glory to this body tliot other municipal bodies received in our columnb at that nomination meeting wc pointed out the difilcultiea in connection with reporting all the activities and asked the member if in ufi recollection the board had requested any items to be omitted from the reports tyom his oriticbm it would appear the reports were made quit to failure onee is excusable but we made resolve to use our best endeavors the next yeor to report every meeting of the bchool board that it wus possible or lay the blame where it belonged that was our reason solely for stuttng that one of the motions wns deleted from lm fiiil pklss rtyort nt the request of the board at the meeting of may 15 we mode no further comment the next issue of tvc trcc prcss contained three lejtcrs from citizens regarding the board s action which was not reported and the report of a meeting from which the editor was expelled by resolution of airs b m wilson and mrs a f hnvill these two 1 rustecs and trustee masters voted for the resolution trustee beswick was opposed and trustees g r agncw and chair man hall did not express themselves we made the following comment on that meeting it would appear that the bchool board da desire meeting reported in part taut desire to delete those items which they know will bring criticism it such l tho case we agree with them that tin pncc puma will necessarily needto he excluded from the meetings thelr action at the liut two meetings aa thaaji that they prefer to conduct cetimln of the ccljool affairs without the confidence of he quhlu and the light of publicity the comment on the question under considera ion up o this imagined that any public body that had the oversight of so much expenditure would be in the same category as councils where any citizen may demand to see the minutes of mcotings but school boards nrc differently managed it seems peculiar but such is the case we have had the confidence of the council and other public bodies and believe that members of these bodies will bear us out when wc lay that we have never betrayed their confidence wc have had verbal and written invitaun5 to report the meetings o the school bonrd isvacc of both of these we have been refused admission and told we were not wanted we huve a letter on hie stating we would receive due notice of nil meetings and in less than two month we were told by the chairman we were not wanted at a meeting contrast this section of the act regarding school board meetings with the following section no 227 of the municipal act regarding tire publics relation to municipal councils any person may at all reasonable hours inspect any of the records books or documentn mentioned in the next preceding section and the minutes apd proceedings of any committee of the council whether the oat of the committee have beep adopted or riot and on election day it docsn t matter so much if an editor or reporter has the door shut in his face told he is not wanted or that he is not u gentleman or other uncomplimentary things most of them get accustomed to such things in their service of securing the nous that its readers ieel they are entitled to know public business can be carried on in the full knowledge of the public und when conducted in this way usually is for the best interests of the com munity persons can be elected who know how to d business along these lines the council and other public bodies have proven tile truth of this statement on nomination and eleption days the electors are the final supreme juclges we iqd roferencc to earlier in the year they can speak regarding he conduct of their business they can answer whether a puhhc body in considering a pgtition pives conaidcrntion to it pr m reads ffic namea and criticizes the signers rumor has it that some members have not decided whether they will undertake the duties again thta year or not scvoral new candidates are men tionad in other rumors the ratepayers innings will bo on these two days we have told and shown why the school board meetings do not receive publicity if the public believe them their business on election day they cgn put into oflice individuals who can conduct business with public confidence and that will bear the scrutiny of the ratepayers the issues are now up for decision by the ratepayers do th ratepayers believe they have a right to know the proceedings f 0 public body that administers the spending of sib 000 yearly
