possible for people to indulge in this healthful recreation throughout the year greater indulgence would naturally najkethe health of the nation greater it may also be the means of saving the swimmer leadership lots of people arc ready to follow if there is some one ready to take the lead many of you youngs people seem to labor under a sense of grievance be cause there is no one to start you in the way you should go instead of looking around for a leader look within each of you is capable of being your own leador of choosing your way and following it only by practic ing leadership in yourself and making a success of it can you be ready to lead others dlstempter responds quickly to doug las egyptian liniment keep a bottle handy lit the stable in writing this weeks chronicle i want to go back a week and tell you about my interesting weekend i went with the same friends and to the same place and stayed with the same people as i did about this time last year that is to say we went to queenston arid niagara falls we had a lovely drive along a comparatively quiet highway but when we reached niagara there was such a large crowd of people we could hardly see the falls at all thirty thousand people was the official count and the traffic officers must surely have had a happy time controlling the endless stream of cars traffic these days is almost as incom prehensible as running water we travelled along a very busy highway on labor day and one time when we had pulled up at a gas station i sat and watched the traffic steadily coming and going in one continuous stream it seemed almost unbelievable that how ever long we chose to stay there an almost unbroken line of traffic would continue ito pass us by like spring water however much went before there was always still more to come after we did not stay at the falls very long because the milling throng made it almost impossible for us to really enjoy ourselves and it also seemed to detract from the dignity of the scienic sur roundings we moved on to queenston heights and had a picnic lunch in the shadow of brocks monument and in the company of mosquitoes which we were tempted to think were of historic origin since they gave every evidence of hav ing accumulated strength of mind and purpose through the passing years we spent the night at a house in queenston village the house stood on high ground and very soon we discovered an upstair verandah overlooking queenston docks to the right of us was brocks monument and to the left a monument erected to the memory of those who fell in the great war queenston is a lovely little village at any time but the next morning i found it had an added charm in the glory of a newborn day the air was sweet and cool tourists were still asleep and the highway was practically deserted the people at the house where we stayed provldedthe human element interest without which no trip is entire ly a success they were people of cul ture and refinement and in throwing open their home for the accomodation of tourists had made many pleasing con tacts possibly our interest was mutual because we all seemed equally anxious to renew acquaintances made last year- to come into a meal was not like walking into a strange boarding house but was more like coming back to friends in terested in our coming and going and our adventures in between whiles monday morning we crossed over the lewiston bridge to the states en route to old fort niagara which was prepar ing for its threeday celebration of the four nations interested in the restora tion and preservation of the old fort in passing over the moat bridge and through the gates of the castle we meta phorically stepped back over three hun dred years and found within ithe castle striking evidence of the privation and hardslitps of those who fought in the cause of freedom in the castle kitchen was a large brick oven where bread was baked for the men of the garrison here also were many crude utensils and cul inary implements in the guard room one large bunk was built the entire length of the room higher at the head than the foot to ensure light repose for the sleepers another room was the jesuit chapel with the original altar and crucifix a curloous musty smell was noticeable in the cell used for soli tary confinement a chain and shackle was in one corner and in this cell with out light or ventilation a man was im prisoned for two years and was found to be totally blind when released one officers chamber was comparatively luxurious with a builtin fourposter bed a comfortable leather chair clothes chest table and an open fireplace the attic which ran the full length of the castle was apparently a lookout and recreation room from each window which couldon occasion be heavily shuttered was some kind of gun which looked like an antiquated machine gun but in that i may be mistaken the windows on three sides overlooked the lnke and as one looked out over the peaceful blue waters it was hard to realize that this particular place had been the scene of so much bloodshed that in this same castle had lived men who died a slow death of wont and suf fering during what wns known as the year of starvation- when only twqlve men survived out of one hundred who had been stationed at the garrison with many a backward glance we re traced our steps and started wr home ward journey glad that we had taken the time and opportunity to visit old fort niagara in these days of com parative ease and comfort it ia-some- times well we should remember that our present mode of life is not ours by virtue of ability but rather as a heritage from our forefathers in the 18th and 19th century the safety of posterity and comfort of the present day was won by the loyalty and tenacity of purpose hlfch characterized the
