r r thursday september 27th 1934 the acton free press page seven everyday folk this la a song of everyday folk who weep at a sorrow and laugh at a joke just everyday husbands and everyday wives r who in their little trim bouses live every day lives you may think when you meet them theres nothing to say of these people who jogtrot through life every day but in lifes passlrig drama they play their own ports with courage to back up the hope in their hearts theres valor heroic that passes untold theres laughter and love far more precious than gold there are poor folk enriching the world every day by the beautiful kindnesses done on their way but to write the story of everyday men is a task far beyond the small power of a pen for the wide world is turned by the num berless hosts of ithe everyday folk in their everyday posts v twenty years ago chronicles of ginger farm written specially for the free press by gwendoline p clarke i i working hard is hard work and too much pleasure is also hard work but when one has a week of combined plea sure and hard work then it is surely a time of real hard work i and that is how this week has been partner decided to have the driving shed shingled since the machinery might just as well have been outside so on monday two men arrived to atart on the job and they were here every day until four ocjock saturday partner had to leave his ploughing so as to be on hand to collect the shingles nails ana sheeting that were thrown down i got quite alarmed and spread blankets on the ground be cause one side where they threw itne old shingles was right on the track where i run out the car and i didnt just fancy 0 picking up an assortment of nails in my tires each time i wen1 out and of course as luck would have it i had to work onthe new sesrd moving pij- us car more than usual this week ture building is progressing rapidly th9 reason the men were always run from the issue of the free press thursday october 1st 1914 bricklayers are now working on the second storey flags are flying at naif rast on our public buildings in due respect to our late lamented premier mr joseph bird of meadowvale has purchased the 200 acre farm in eaques- ing- township belonging to mr john hardy of milton a paris dispatch says that the ger man right has been entirely broken aril is now being pursued by the allies all the automobiles in northern france have been requislted for the purpose of pursuit canadas contingent has embarkei the work of embarkation occupied about five days the 32000 soldiers went hi transports heavily armed and guarded by british menofwar in sufficient force to prevent any attack by german cruisers the pall pair established a record in attendance this year and was a splendid success all the way through the first evening the hall was open to the public and over 200 took advantage of the op portunity to view the smaller exhibits the attendance netted 21 00 gate re ceipts a very gratifying inauguration the attendance on the second day was estimated at 3000 and the gate receipts totalled 48625 exceeding the previous year by 60 born wrigglesworth at ashgrove on september 21st 1914 to mr and mrs walter wrigglesworth a daughter died smyth at the family residence camu- bellvllle on friday september 25th 1914 robert a smyth aged 39 years persian balm is alluringly fragrant adds a charming refinement to the most finished appearance creates and pre serves complexions of surpassing loveli ness and texture softens and whitens the hands cools and dispels all irrita tion caused by weather conditions swift ly absorbed by the tissues leaving never a vestige of stickiness a peerless toilet requisite invaluable to all women who care for elegance and distinction ning short of something if it wasnt nails it was spikes and if it wasnt spikes it was something else and when any thing was wanted it as always i who had to get it partner had his work cut out hunting up lumber to patch the sheet ing of course it was generally in the morn ing that these trips had to be made and its a fine hustle i would have to get the dinner cooked and on the table in time so it was and then there was some thing on nearly every day and partner insisted there was no need for me to stay at home so on wednesday i col lected some friends and attended a local fair telling them at home that i would be back about five oclock the fair vaa good and so were my intentions as re gards getting home but alas there is no accounting for what the optimist will do when she is in a contrary mood i left her parked on a street where there were only a few cars all parked straight so i did likewise leaving plenty of room fore and aft to get out easily but after i had gone some kino person came along bumped my car ahead so that when i canadas health service during the last census year canada spent in the neighborhood of 100 million dollars to reimbuise persons whose ac tivities are concerned wlth the mainten anee and restoration of health the medical health service of the dominion employed 24153 males and 44274 females of the males 9777 were wageeamers who reported earnings of 106792000 while 26324 of the females earned 1389800 comparatively few of the 10000 surgeons physicians and dentists were wageearners but estimating their incomes at the comparatively low rate of 4000 a year the gross receipts of 10000 doctors physicians and surgeons would amount to 40000000 while the 4000 dentists whose net earnings are probably lower but whose gross receipts would probably average as high would receive 16000000 then there were 869 opticians 542 chiropractors 20441 graduate nurses 11462 nurses in train ing l046 veterinary surgeons and 1425 health professionals graduate nurses who were wageearners averaged 914 in- earnings at which rate their total earnings would have been 18683000 while the amount involved in the main tenance and allowance to nurses in train ing would bring the total paid out to the nursing profession to at least 25000000 pees paid by patients in hospitals other than mental amounted to 16006600 the magic handkerchief ke press a small handkerchief well down into the bottom or a tumbler and prepare a deep basin full of water a big pudding basin would do quite well ask some one if he could put the tumbler right under the water without getting the handkerchief after a little thought he will probably say that this cannot pos sibly be done but you can show him that it can be done i take the tumbler and holding it upside down push it slowly into the water you can go on until the water is right over the bottom of the glass which is of course uppermost l then take the glass out an the hand kerchief inside will be foun to be per fectly dry this is because the air in the tumbler although it is compressed when you push the glass into the water is still there in sufficient quantity to keep the handkerchief dry came to get it it was in the middle or a string of five all of them with bumpers touching how i was going- tcr get out was past my comprehension hut that little problem ceased to worry me after i had attempt ed to unlock the door and broke the key hunt up a garage man and get another key that was the only thing to do so we walked what seemed like four or five miles got a garage man to the rescue and then none of his keys would fit just as he was going to force the lock i had a brain wave never mind how or what but i unlocked the door by the drivers seat the next thing was to get out this little matter i left to the garage man and it took him about ten minutes to do the trick now i wonder is this inconvenience really unavoidable i have never had this kind of trouble in the cities where everyone is more or less careful to ob serve traffic rules and regulations but in small towns and villages where park ing is practically left to the discretion of automobile owners one repeatedly comes up against something of this kind every one doesnt wont to go home at the same time so when straight parking is neces sary surely enough room could be left for any person to get his car out with out too much inconvenience even when cars are parked at an angle some driv ers drive in too straight making it dif ficult for the next car to get out well to cut a long story short we eventually got home about five minutes tn six with the pleasure of the day somewhat marred by the trouble of get ting home daughter and i got supper for the men washed dishes fed hens aid chickens and then she and i and some of our neighbors were away again to on institute meeuig which i would not have missed for anything since there was a splendid speaker and two dear little italian children singing duetts thursday afternoon i was invited out to another institute meeting ithis tlmr away out in the country and this i ateoiattended friday was our regular i o d e meetlngc but this time i didnt go because partner wanted me to do some business for him which meant another trip across country on the way i made two calls and the drive was lovely so it was another afternoon of business andtpleasure combined and now it is saturday and it seems to me there is a little extra work needed to be done to the house the men have finished the roof and from the number of cars on the road it would seem that everyone else is away to the ball game from the yelling i hear it sounds as if the home boys are winning the news of the yachtrace is not so good may the best ihan win is the sportsmans creed but in this case i would like to add may the best man be t o m sopwith and his gallahtlittle craft en deavour at times likc these we wish we had a radio partner cant wait for the paper each day to hear the resulb so someone with a radio has to be lickjed a small boy was playing in a hole dug out of the side of a hill when the roof caved in fortunately his plight was observed and onlookers rushed to hl- rescue they dug him- out bruised bleeding shrilly im not licked yet the attitude of this little chap com pares very favorably with that of an older boy who had not had the advant age of an early training in the social amenities he came to the city when he was about sixteen and as he possessr ed a keen mind and an appetite for wok he advanced rapidly one night he was invited to dinner at the home of the junior partner during the meal he committed a breach of etiquette that caused a gleam of amusement in the eyes of the young woman who sat op posite he knew what the look meant soon after dinner he excused himself and since then he never has accepted an invitation from people to whom good manners are important for all his success he is morose embittered how much does it take to lick you have you let yourself be licked by a quick
