terms that used to appear on auction sale bills giving so many months credit on approved joint notes and a percentage off for cash are apparently a thing of the past a more abbreviated form is now in common use and the most of these sales are usual ly terms cash numbers of the posters also bear the admonition that nothing is to be taken from the premises until satisfactorily settled for it would appear that the farmer has gone on the cash and carry basis also can it be that the credit system is about to go from all phases of activity a few years ago everyone was urged to buy on easy terms it would seem that the terms were so easy that every one bought the paying days are here they have struck every walk of life and the sales are apparent ly just another evidence of the cash basis being es tablished just talk with a week to go before the nomination day municipal affairs this year assume a much more prominent place in discussions than is usual quite often municipal affairs occupy the centre of the stage only during the week between nomination day and election day but this year the matter is quite dif ferent ana a varietyof possible nominees for office seems to include a goodly number of citizens about the town just what is accountable for the attitude is hard to state acclamations do not usually run along indefinitely and it will be recalled that all offices were filled by acclamation last year the ac tivity it would seem is not confined to any one body but new faces are proposed for a majority of the offices nomination day is but a week away and then it can be seen whether the present rumors are serious or just disgruntled talk lacking the construc tive element to right wrongs complaihedr about accepting municipal office the timidity of accepting municipal office by many men well qualified to fill these positions is often a source of wonder to ratepayers about election time we believe that the individual voter is largely to blame for this condition of affairs too often the vote given is too highly held and often too much is expected selfishly by the individual for the vote a vote given to a man as a favor when you know he has not the capabilities for public office is no gift to that individual putting him in public officeif un qualified only places him up for ridicule by your action which can scarcely be termed a friendly act on the other hand the condemnation of a public man because he has refused or failed to grant personal favors to the detriment of the general public is a spendid way to keep good officials out of office the voter needs to forget his personal prejudices and exercise his franchise for the best interests of the community as a whole adton and every other mun icipality needs its best citizens to administer its affairs men who have by their activities made a success of life can apply the same principles into making a success of the life of the community dont let personal prejudices against the individual in- fluence your vote but rather weigh his ability for the task you are asking him to carry to a successful conclusion for you an honored son one of actons sons who has made a name for himself in the world sir donald mann passed away on sunday and on tuesday the remains were inter red in the family plot in fairview cemetery it was not the privilege of the present editor to be intimate ly acquainted with this honored son of acton but the incidents of his boyhood life spent here were heard many times from men of his day many of whom have passed to the great beyond sir donald mann was in many respects one of the most remarkable men ever produced in canada as a youth he had feweducational facilities but he had a keen observant mind and in later years he be came deeply read along the lines which appealed to him his experiences on a farm atfd in lumbering on a small scale with limited capital paved the way to future greatness as a railway builder he was engaged intaking out ties for the c p r at a place about 60 miles east of winnipeg on a visit to that city he met mr herbert holt later sir herbert then a railway draftsman who suggested forming a railway construction firm about this time mr james ross having finished the credit valley railway went west and came into contact with the embryo contractors mr mackenzie later sir william had furnished material for the credit valley and at mr ross suggestion also went west thus in time there came into existence the celebrated firm ross mackenzie mann and holt after com pleting several c p r contracts the firm dissolved but mackenzie and mann saw a profitable opening in a derelict railway in manitoba from this they de veloped into the builders and at least nominally proprietors of a transcontinental railway mann familiarly known from ocean to ocean as dan was the practical member of the team he had such extraordinary skill in the successful handling of rail way navvies that he was considered to be the best man in america on the dump he was also credit ed with uncanny ability in sizing up a territory or district to obtain the best route for a new line in this however he was greatly aided eytfis very cap able enginer m f macleod during the lifetime of his fqtber sir donald was a frequent visitor to acton even following his death he occasionally visited the home town but the friends of former years became fewer sir donald left acton at the age of seventeen years by his own initiativeness and aggressiveness he made his mark in the world and an able contribution to the develop raent of acton this native son the important and instructive passages of scripture but there does not seem to be much con nection between the title given to the lesson by the committee and the les son however ithat need not embarrass one at all either in the study or teach ing of the lesson forget it the open ing verses of this chapter emphasise our blessedness these emphasize our responsibilities and our obligations they are full of suggestiveness the office of salt is to flavor to cleanse and to preserve from decay it is one of the most useful articles in the world be lievers in christ keep human society from spoiling and give a proper savor to it but if the salt lose its virtue nothing is more useless its virtue cannot be restored and it is of no use for food for the land nor for a ferti lizer 1fer the dunghill it is good for nothing all that can be done with it is to cast it out into the road and let it be trodden under the foot of men so it is with a professed believer in christ when he loses the savor of godli ness and the preservative power of life in the spirit what a wretched out cast a savorless religionist is and how men delight to tramp upon him salt loses its savor by lwnmlrig mixed with earth the christian loses his savor by becoming mixed with earth by comprom ising with the world while christs disciples are the salt of the earth they are also the light of the world primarily jesus is himself the light of the world jno 8 12 but what he is in himself he also makes his dis ciples to be in him personally he is no longer in the world but he is here in his disciples and gives light to the world through them christ is in us acton is proud of the life work of th hope el b m h shines out on the world through us it lb a glorious but it is also a very solemn thought that the world gets all its light through us how much does it get through you there is a very dark spot somewhere in this world unless you are illuminating it well might jesus say and well may we heed when he does say let your light shine be fore men we do not need to make it shine god does that but ve should let it shine we should not parade our virtues simply manifest them the more light we receive from him the more will we give forth to others let us get the very uttermost that we can it is in our good works that we give light our aim in these good works should be not that men may glorify us but our father in heaven he is the real worker ii a model church acts 2 4247 peters sermon on the day ofpene- cost had a tremendous eflect three thousand were saved by it the sermon was simply scriptural argument made effective by the holy splrlfs- power no such effect had followed jesus own preaching and his promises that they should do greater works after his ascen sion than he himself had wrought dur ing his humiliation jno 14 12 was thus fulfilled and we today are united with this same exalted christ in the place and power at gods right hand and may speak in the power of this same mighty spirit the inward reception of the word was outwardly expressed in baptism these 3000 baptisms in a day were the outcome of the ten days of waiting tfpon god in prayer cf ch 1 14 surely those ten days had not been wasted the work proved to be lasting they continued steadfastly stedfast continuance is a matter of im menseimportance in the christian life jno 8 81 32 lu 8 15 heb 10 39 mat 24 13 rev 2 10 the is one of the nec essities of healthy christian growth eph 4 13 16 the one who seeks to grow in seclusion separated from the brethren is doomed not only to disap pointment but worse still to sad dis tortion of character the fellowship of early church but the need of the love that- led to it was continually preached each day found them in the place set an organic way this community of goods did not continue long in that tho apostles was good fellowship for it it is quite evident that expremier henry doesnt believe in being easily shoved aside these days are surely hectic ones for party leaders and a deposed leader seems to be in a most pitiable plight maybe youve noticed it also both sides of the main entrance doors at the parliament buildings in toronto are labelled push nominations for municipal office are just a week from tomorrow their proximity seems to bring more candidates to the fore judging by the lists of new hockey players in a number of centres it would appear that the residence rule will not be used this year by the o h a exports of live cattle from canada to the british isles in 1934 up to october 25th totalled 44138 com pared with 43792 in the corresponding period of 1933 electric railways in canada carried 585385094 passengers during 1933 gross revenues collected by the fortyone companies in operation amounted to 39383965 and operating expenses totalled 27917- 265 construction contracts awarded in canada during october totalled 11152700 according to maclean building reports limited- construction awards for the tenmonth period ended october now aggregate 109297800 the town of midland is in rather an unenviable position according to the minister of welfar it owes the provincial government 54000 ana the expremier can assure midland that the government collected amounts owing in full it is reported that the ontario department of health is giving consideration to a plan to deal with alcoholics in the same manner as cases of insanity the booze question beings on many angles as its development continues we havent heard of any circular appealsfrom the moderation league recent ly the brampton conservator says that fairminded regular obedience to jesus commandment to show his death j and to feed upon him in the communloh i service 4 in prayers just here is the point wrfere the average christian of today departs most lamentably from the example of the apostolic church how few of lis can be said to continue stedfastiy in prayer and herein lies the secret of the poverty and the power- lessness of the average church stedfast continuance in prayer was one of the most marked characteristics of the early church cr ch 1 14 4 24 31 6 4 6 ro 12 12 eph 6 18 col 4 2 the effect of this stedfast continuance was that fear came upon every soul and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles lovj abounded in that early church everyone regarded his property as a sacred trust for the whole body the true principal of distribution was adopted according as any one had need this was a real christian socialism and is possible where true love abounds and where the spirit rules and only there but the spirit of whin was done in the early church should guide every individual believer today even if the form of it is impossible in apart for the worship of god there and at home they led lives of praise gladness and singleheartedness such a church must grow and that chuch did grow it was the lord himsell who gave the additions there was not a period of great ingathering followed by great reaction and stagnation but the additions were of dally occurrence and they were of the right sort saved people who not only forsook their ilns but mended their lives who joined themselves urito a band of men and women who but a brief period before they had regarded as the fanatical fol lowers of a visionary moreover in no subsequent age was the true spirit of the rounder of our faith more richly evi dent than it was
