mliton gbl bertram outlined the activities of the regiment during the past year and announced the intention of the lorn soots to embark on an active recruiting campaign in the near fu ture adding it was one reason why they were making an appeal to the council to increase its grant this year if it were at all possible capt mc- clure apoke on behalf of the band and asked that the council give it what support it could cap mcclure stated that the annual upkeep of the band was approximately 1900 twentynlne former members were now on active service capt smith gave an accounting of the regiments disbursements v mr e a whltelock halloo county agricultural representative made a brief but stirring appeal to the coun cil in the interest of agriculture mr whltelock spoke of farming activities of 1642 as being a marvellous achievement notwithstanding bad weather and labor difficulties i feel said mr whltelock that our farm people are worthy of the sacri fices of our boys in the armed forces reference was also made to farm labor difficulties likely to be encoun tered in the coming season which mr whltelock felt could be mater ially assisted by an organized ex change labor program among neigh bors and asked each member of the council to do all in his power to as sist any such cooperative movement which might be started in his com munity mr whltelock concluded by sayingvit is generally acknowledg ed that the anglosaxon race is given to grousing but when the going gets tough they keep on going until the job is done this characteristic ho felt applie ver truly to agricul ture reports of standing committer were considered in committee of the whole with reeve w j robertson in the chair letters were read from the red cross branches of acton bur lington georgetown and oakvllle ap pealing for financial assistance and suggesting that council give a grant of s5000 to be divided among the county branches some discussion followed and while members were unanimous in their high regard for the splendid work the red cross is doing yet in vlewof the fact that a countywide personal campaign is al ready in progress it was felt that council would not be justified in giv ing too large a grant which in effect would be to make people pay twice once voluntarily and again through county taxation it was therefore moved by mr hulmer seconded by mr craig that halton county com ell give a grant of 1000 to the red cross to be divided equally among tho five districts carried an amend ment by may and brown to give j 000 was defeated moved by mr hulmer tutonded by may that the lome scots regiment of hnlton peel and dufforin be granted the sum of 600 and the regi mental band a uront of 400 cur ried some discussion as to whether corn- borer inspectors should be appointed or the service discontinued took up considerable time the matter was finally settled by a motion which car ried and was moved by w j robert son and c h heslbp that corn borer inspection be continued and that they be appointed as follows nelson chas readhead trafalgar l patterson esqueslng w camp bell nassagac a r j anderson the rate of pay to be the uime as 1942 a letter was read from the county slid tor mr w i dick with refer ee to the railway service at camp- bellvtlle and as a result it was decid ed that council should request that a meeting be arranged with represen tatives of the cpr railway board for the purpose of arriving at some agreement for better service mr roy smith county engineer suggested that the county council sometime in the near future invite as their piests representatives of the various public schools throughout the county in order that children fn higher trades might become better acquainted with the functioning of sunlcipal bodies knowledge which r smith asserted was sadly lack ing the suggestion met with ap proval by the council and necessary arrangements were left to mr jsmlth council adjourned to meet at the callof the warden mixsfltsl show other features at annual meet- injr of jersey breeders lome ella rockwood is president at the postponed annual meeting of the halton jersey cattle club which wan held in the hornby orange hall on thursday of last week watson h porter editor of the farmers advo cate was the guest speaker mr porter was a member of the bomber press which spent some weeks in britain late ant summer the speaker gave a graphic description first of his experiences flying in a bomber to and from britain second of agricul tural conditions in britain third of his impression gained visiting our boys in the armed forces including the air command and last his im pressions of the british people and also of the damage to british cities by enemy bombing fourteen hours after leaving mon- lit treat the party of canndlnn pressmen etl landed n britain the maker stress- cdhlie tremendous possibilities of the aeroplane os a means of transporta tion in the post wnr period mr porter predicted that the day was not fur dutant when we in canada would have huce alt liners pulling a string of gliders the individual units of which would im cut off at vnrioun targe centres he even felt plans would be developed by which kuch air liners would be enabled to pick up additional gliders at various cities m- route without making landings in his in ten wily interesting descrip tion of developments in british agri culture mr porter pointed out that in 1042 increased agricultural pro duction in britain hnd p rmltted the release of 5 million tons of shlpttlnx space for other commodities the speaker pointed out that canudlans generally had a conception of britnln as a small country a place of tmall holdings small fields etc cone- quently it was a surprise therefore to find in many english countries that the fields are larger than even in western ontario furthermore that their farming is extensively mechaniz ed with one tract on to every 100 acts of cultivated land in britain on every side stated the speaker ther was an amazing amount of cereal crops in live stock products the dafrv cow holds no 1 priority it has been found in britain that on the average 10 acres in wheat will sustain 20 per sons for one year 10 acres in pota toes will sustain 40 persons for one year 10 acres devoted to dairying will sustain 4 persons for one year 10 acrei devoted to beef will sustain 1 person for one year it is therefore easy to realize states mr porter why british agriculture has been built with the emphasis on production of potatoes cereals sugar beets and continued on page eight a few weeks ago the athfvra and sons were to the forefront in spocia services and gatherings at the united church but this week she mothers and dsughtefcfi were the pottunent ones on sunday raomlng a mothers and daughters service was featured when the mothers and daughters choir led the singing and rendered several anthems mrs veldhuls and mrs cuiien sang a duett and jean harris annetta evans eleanor beatty co it girls sang a chorus and quartette number mrs beatty and eleanor contributed a duett and mrs veldhuls and also sang a duett miss doris wilson and miss ethel pridham gave a piano duett the guest speaker was miss s bennett of georgetown who pointed out in her fine address the possibili ties that the young women have to day in many fields of business life and other activities which were not open to them a few years ago in speaking of the new order of life that was prophesied after the war miss bennett drew attention to the fact that of all the speakers on this sub- ject to which she had listened only madame chiang kaishek had said that this new order could only be good if it was a christian order many others may have thought that the new order must be christian but only she had expressed it mrs h caldwell presided over the program and at thje close mothers and daughters enjoyed a delightful lunch and a social j eramosa council 0re bwdy is c iu i may be developed has spec al present and reeve d d gray la the chair the lireve stated that he had call ed the meeting and invited a num ber of ratepayers to discuss the prob lem of opening roads now unfit for either sleighs or wheels several ratepayers attended and submitted that there was serious loss and inconvenience in some sections through blocked roads and conse quent inability to dispose of produce and live stork at the proper time it was also established that not one of the five mall routes from rockwood was open all the way for either a cutter or car it seemed to be the genera opinion of the ratepayers present that the cost of purchasing or renting a snow- plow with the consequent increase of taxes would be readily offset by the savings of a large number of rate payers and the convenience of open roads would be almost a clear gain the iteeve thanked the ratepayers for attending and expressing their views he assured them that the coun cil would use every effort to open the roads immediately and would million pounds in 1942 eggs from a few thousand dozen in prewar years up to approxi mately 40 million dozen in 1942 and at the same time stated dr christie our farm people have supplied great ly
