but no matter what yoa use as fillings you need to make sure the shells are not tough and heavy the secret of successful popovers and of puffs la two-nld- beating to incorporate plenty of air and careful baking to hold the shape of the pop- over and putt made by expanding the steam inside the expanding steam causes the mixture to rise and the combination of glutten in the bread flour and the been enjqyuur the g autumn bannockbum womens institute as pic to see the erection ot a on munlty hall for that district farm women surely have their troubles when- it comes to doing war work two or three weeks ago our insti tute decided to hold a euchre and auction sale to raise funds for war work durposes we also decided to make several quilts to be auctioned off but alas we didnt take corn bees into consklerauon when making our plans so last monday when we had two quilts set up and were all ready to go so were the corn cut ters in spite of the fact that nearly all our members are willing workers regrets were coming in wholesale so arry i cant possibly quilt today we are filling silo tomorrow and x must get my baking done or again i wont be able to come because i have to take chickens to the city tomorrow bill cant go he has to go to a cornbee so that was that it just meant that the few of us who were not tied up with corn bees liad to work that much harder we strug gled painfully on working against time and with very oore fingers we somehow managed to get two quilts done but had to give up the third then came the big day friday and still there were corn bee comp lications we began to wonder if there would be anyone out at all you know how a feeling of gloom possesses you dont you how you think before the affair ever gets started that it cannot possibly sue- ceedt but we did the same as you probably would have done just car ried on and hoped for the best and the best was surprisingly good we netted over a hundred dollars corn bees notwithstanding tho auction sale was lots of fun there was even a wee collie pup for sale but the next day well it was not only the morning after the night before but tho morning after a week of real hard work however so far us x know everyone is stiuvohvo to tell the tale sometimes i think we farm women are crazy to try doing any war work at all wo hnve so much to occupy our time and yet if we did not make tho effort there would be far loss roil cross work going overseas because i have been told repeatedly that the jiroportlon of work coming from the country is greater than that coming from urban and city centres it looks as if there ore lifters and lonncrc in war time as well as in pence making use of the odd minutes is largely a matter of habit and surely it is just us easy for tho urban housewife as the farm woman to pick up a piece of knitting as sho chats away to casual callers no apology should be necessary kather should an excuse be needed if time is wasted we can leave that to the men if i ever see n man mak ing use of spare time othor than to puff at n pipe or roll a cigarette i shall drop in my tracks of course the answer to that is wo never hnve any spare time or if we do we need to relax well tho women dont have any kpare time either not in the coun try anyway whon we relax we do it by working at something different we wash dishes and thon sit down and knit or we finish the ironing and then darn tho nooks personally i have often darnod the socks in more ways than ono that is one reason why i like tho radio you can keep up with all the news or listen to any program you like as you work but it takes time to wade through the dally press that doesntgo for our hometown weekly though you just have to read that no matter what happens the radio wont tell you anything about mary smiths wed ding or what happened at that club meeting at which you failed to ap pear this is thanksgiving day i cel ebrated by having a huge wash and as surely as washday comes around i wish more and more for hydro when it was available we couldnt afford it now we might be able to scrape up an odd dollar or two we cant get it however i did have a good strong arm to help me today now partner is busy puttying win dows and i well you know what i am doing but dont think we have nothing to be thankful for we have but we dont feel it necessary to celebrate in the ordinary way there is too much other work to be done family removed to toronto this they have been residents of acton for seventeen years several of the family have good posluonsln the dry so the family will be together the first
