public service it s your vote use it as you like but use it on monday in acton ttottajf will go lp the announcement was finally made last thursday of change in the sale and distribution of liquor ont ario is to have a liquor licensing act which we suppose gives way to the liquor control act one thing can be said that the new name n more applic able the new act was announced by premier drew with a scries of excuses for failure of the present sys tem one omission of premier drew s was that he forgot to tell us that the ontario government had failed in its duty of law enforcement of its own laws ami to give any assurance that the new act will be any better enforced the proclaiming of the new act is plainly a widen ing of sale there has been no effort made to secure public opinion in a democratic way by vote of the peopl but as far as that goes liquor legislation has not been oted upon b the people in many years regardless of who was premier or what government was in power under the new act cities o f ov r v 000 get the sale of liquor b the glass in hotels taverns clubs militar messes whether thc want it or not in the rest of the province a vote must be taken thre s going to be a re classification of present establishments and provision is made for restaurant licenses for salt of beer and wine with meals oh es it s going to be eas to get and cns to drink it most an plitet the old act faited the new at has o ft restrictions th it it cannot fail ontario is making it easier to suiirt and drink intoxicating liquors and m re revtnie ten tin but who asked for thi- u ikr most s mple elinution uc can think of s that a high school district is a gr up of municipal ities who come togtthor to have a larger school so that pupils mav have the same advantages as those in cities or large centres where the assessment and enrolment are large enough to provide this wider course of studies i there seems to be little argument that the larger school is desirable but chief opposition develops in the location of the school and thedifficulttes of travel to the larger institution particularly in win ter time it is only natural that no municipality wants to close down an institution such as a high school which has been built up over many vears and in which there js reason for much local pride and sentiment the only solution to that is balancing of which is the greater of whether the new step will compensate for the seeming sacrifice with highway jravcl in the winter as at presen the matter of transportation has in most cases be eft itnagnificd in the case of halton county three districts arc a r ran aged the southern districts are oakville and burlington and of course in thesa districts no schools were dosed only the two schools established will be enlarged the northern halton district presents a different problem it means theclosing of the present three schools in milton acton and georgetown and the establishing of a complete new unit in some central location in the district the district ot t lined fur north halton would make the largest of any in the county and serve the greatest number it will be an uuusuplly strong school and with a new build ing when available offer pupils the finest in cd uiational facilities fien if the district doubles its pment population the forming of a distnct for mil tun acton georgetown nassagawya and i sques mg is feasible and it might alii fhclude portions of adjoining townships as the governing factor in th new arrangement is service to a district rather than long any coajity boundary lines it is intcsesting to note that those who study the plan usually give it approval the difficulty seems to be that it requires study which opponents ofttn neglect to give the question at a meeting in acton list rrk with rrprt mntativcs luni thrrr towns and four townships a show of hands shomrd all voting to be in favor of establishment of a district and none opposed uc should also esplam that this dccisn n a reached after those attending the meeting hud full opportunity for information and a barrage of questions answered having attended many ol these meetings and having hind i he r splanatiuns of the north halton d strict we arc quite frank to a that we hive altci it ur j mi n from the first intimation ot a vear l and n fimr the plan we are auaie that i will take si nc c operation of all concerned to bring it into t fftet t ut we are convinced that such an a titudc will he taken when the mtd of the present anj lutuie is hong cmisidercs l a relief it was certainly a relief to hear on saturday that the coal miners were going back to the pits on mon day to get out coal to keep the wheels of industry rolling 1 his continent had been built up to have too much dependence on coal many industries have found that during this period of strikes and many have changed to oil burning or a combination of the two systems strikes do not always help the striker and in this case it will be found that a lot of the market for soft coal hasfcwen lost through the un certainty of supply it is fortunate that at the beginning of winter the strike was stopped in less than three weeks certainty the issues at atake can be adjusted without this needless suffering of many citizens of this con tinent the details of the settlement have not at the time of writing been announced but the public re gard for john l lewis which was fast going down is improved by his sending the miners back to work no other group we know of arc so obedient to the dictation of one man and it may not be good for any group to be so docile to the frailties of any one hu msn being worth inquiry the ontario gazette december ft carries official legal notice of the intention of the town of colling wood to redeem all its outstanding debentures hold crs of debentures maturing in the years lm7 to 1957 are thus obliged to accept cash for principal and in terest a further paragraph serves notice that all mat unties as of march ls8 arc called for redemption to complete the tormnlitics the town council wi 1 on dee em her iti declare that all interest will cease to accrue and the above issues will be declared due and pay able no information is given as to the source of funds out of which these maturities will be paid it will be interesting to learn the facts lending to this cnviahl position it may be ol profit to the acton count i to inquire into the matter and it might mean a diutitn of h gh mieicst r iti on sunt ol our st tildint debentures out miiiouim mmtvx i hr tin is sh p hie l in t bt jane ih i i s c i
