wavers were not sure whether the controversy over our canadian flag has anything to do thai c ihi j i hag v n on holidays and at celebrations perhaps the adoption of a distinctive canadian flag iould give the impetus to correct this greving atti tude perhaps its because we are becoming more lazy many of us can remember when on ever holiday and especially on victoria and domin ion day every business place and a great many residents found pride and satisfaction in decor ating their store or residence the practice has gradually declined in these parts at least how many flags were out here last thursday on our dominions birthday thosewhodid make a display were conspicious and to be commend ed we who foiled are certainly slipping into the common rut we havent any solution or any suggestion which will make canadians more flag conscious and desirous of making more use of our flag and a greater display es pecially on patriotic holidays but we do agree with that vast majority who say there should be something done about it the answer will soon be known this week acton launched the biggest com munity effort in its history the raising pf 25000 or more for a community swimming pool to be located in acton park and its to be done by voluntary subscription speaking from our years in acton we know it is our big gest undertaking we know too that if acton folk are determined to have a swimming pool they can and will do the job collectively we have been criticized as setting a high objective frankly from the information we gather unless cost of materials are down when the pool is built we think the pbjective should be higher and the minimum of 25000 will be required to get a good start on the work it may take more to finally complete the job these are problems that in these days of rising costs no one can definitely answer the point 10 remember now is that 25000 is a minimum objective for the task in hand there has been full discussion on the pro ject the answer to the question is an individ ual one it means in round figures that for ev ery inhabitant of acton 10 must be raised and it means that some one has to carry on extra burden forthose children who cannot raise 10 the pledged amount can be spread over an easy payment period of six months the answer will soon be known to actons greatest com munity appeal in varying degrs weve always had real sympathy for the growers of foodstuffs the farmers and all who are so dependent on weather conditions too 4 much moisture or too little rain too much heat or too much cold and so many other things can hove such an adverse effect that it can quickly spoil a whole seasons labour me agree too that the grower has no sched ule fo guide his work if the weather is right the hours must be long and holidays cannot be planned but rather taken when the opportunity is ready in that way the farmer is often for ced to rorego the pleasure of holiday programs that the factory and inside worker can rely i upon yes the weather controls a lot of things and while the outside worker is most affected by its whims those in most every other occupation have its quirks to deal with that upset sched ules in the printing business for instance in sufficient moisture in the atmosphere allows static electricity to build up and make a nuis ance of itself the weather of the past few days with high humidity causes press rollers to swell inks to not dry property and machines affected- by moisture to slow up and not funct ion as smoothly yes we tutve a kindred feeling for those who are most affected by weather conditions no doubt the reason everyone talks about the weather is because most everyone is affected even to the young miss who finds it more diffi cult to keep her nose from getting shiny in the summer heat happy holidays these are the days of summer holidays and withit the thrill of enjoying the great out-of- doors for a week or so and the urge to go places most of us who obey this urge are dur ing all the other weeks in the yearnot accust omed to this summer life its a chainge and a great experience and opportunity for real rec reation but it might be well to keep in mind that these weeks are different and that most of the other folk enjoying them are just the same as we are in driving on a holiday dont plan too tong a journey for one diy remembevyolire on a holiday and out for recreation and relax ation it might be well to take stock of your swimming ability too before going too far in the water and your skill in handling boats or canoes before making too long a trip perhaps wc are all prone to think ourselves experts in many of these outofdoor activities when we get away from home no one wants to be a noono wants to seeh rnrl ctoer3l recollections ol acton back are rising after that mountain of labour out came the answer thateverybody hadknown all along- prices had been rising because of the enormous purchasing power of the canadian people and because in most lines demand still outruns supply of price gouging the committee found that only what it must have expected thfc day it sat down to work save in a few isolated cases where unusual situations prevailed for a brief period no segment in the chain of commodity production and distribution has been reaping extravagant returns to the extent that the committee may have had some educational function for the economic illiterates to the extent that the investigations may have proven that some mythical demons do not exist it undoubtedly had some value adds the same newspaper from one side of its mouth the committee says controls should be reduced from the other side of its mouth come recommendations for new controls in one breath the report recognizes that con sumers in general have the complete and total answer to rising prices they can refuse to buy as was visibly illustrated in the case of beef but in the next breath the report sounds as if it believes some fundamental economic laws have been repealed both in its hearings and in its report the committee appears to believe that our economy is based on the profit system that of course is not true ours is a profit and loss system adds the post season a very pretty wedding was con summated at tho residence of t t moors principal of acton pub lic school when his second daugh ter mlu nellie ard mr chan e jenncr of
