year of publication there are sttll a few of our readers who remember that fir it issue in 1875 and a very few have teen continuous subscribers since that lime one we recall is mr g h brown acton we just cannot let an anniversary occasion pass without a word of thanks to loyal sub senbert corresponients advertisers patrons of commercial printing division and friends who make possible the continuity and progress of a weekly newspaper in acton and all such com mumties if had been our hope that we could mark this 75th year in a special way and to that end much progress has been made we have doubled the sue of our former building and almost com pie ted one of the finest workshops for the staff to be found outside the cities we have the best of printing equipment in this modern shop with automatic presses and machines that are very intricate and interesting we think this expansion is quite in keeping with the commun ity and district growth we plan during the year to hold open house at a date to be announced when anyone will be welcome to visit the plant but this event wil have to be deferred until we are more settled and the weather is cooler it would seem that in the seventy fifth year some latitude might be allowed to let the observance extend over the year so you ii probably be hearing and seeing more of our 75th year in the meantime we re busy producing the history of nassagaweya for a hundred years every possible angle the change appears desir able as the jcc resolution points out the longer weekend would give urban people both grown up and children a chance for a real and useful holiday thateloneis reason enough butthen would also be immense benefit to business generally at present when one of these holidays is observed in the middle of the week there is a costly interruption with no compensating ad vantages whatsoever the financial posl have we learned mud slw 1794t rather interested to learn this week that the brewers and hotel association and the ontario government are making a study of beverage room operations with a view to raising ttw stand ard might be a good idea if club and other licenses would also come within the study among our reading this week was ihe early history of nassagaweya which is being cpm piled for the centennial at trie mtd of this month in 1794 there was an old law in the statute book and this ti part of it the magistrates were to decide as to the number of hotels required in a dis tnt also to enquire into lite life and character of he person applying and if thry find him lo he an honest sober and diligent man they may grant him a license but if the person has not lxen licensed the previous year 1hy may require a testimonial under the hand of the parson and churchward ens and of four reputable and substan tial householders setting forth thai ihe applicant is of good fame soler me and conversation and has taken the oath of allegiance perneler that was the law in 1 7v4 when canada was a very young country it might lx thai our pres nf day lawmakers might give that old law some study in present d ly regulations just when or why it was dropped from the statute ixxiks we do not know but we may well worxti r if the 150 years have tiught us much hows business how wai business during the first half what s the outlook for the second half the financial post nvide an industry by industry survey found conditions still buoyant and over all considered likely to remain so for ihe balance of the year at least employment and over all industrial product ion figures were shll at high levels steel was in a particularly strong position weakening of base metal prices in u s was having llttlo if any effect on canadian production schedules con sumers still had plenty of money to pour into retail cash registers only soft spots showing were in textiles wood pulp and fine papers editorial notes faith of our father when the fathers of confederation met on prince edward island eighty two years ago they pioneered the birth of a nation following a protracted struggle often tinged with bitterness they were able to bring together the territories and factions which now form the dominion of canada the unity of canada had long occupied their mmds and shaped their activities at a con ference in england the previous year the name dominion of canada applied to the uniting provinces was adopted cred t has been given to sir leonard tilley of new brunsvk a sentence from the psalms inspired turn he shall hwe tiom nion from bi a to m and from the nvei unto the t nds of the t irth the founders not onl founded a nation lit oivi t on ideoloov biq enough to hold t toot ther these fathers under whose niton il irhi lecture we hue lived are onl lied to ome kind of report of stewardship how has th s sion been maintained or how has their idea of god dominion been taken up and followed through was it not the intention of our founding statesmen thut gods taw should rule the au t les of this land that absolute standards should become the measure of our pergonal every day living end our national policy yet some will dare to tell us today that the mth of god must be removed from the minds of men school holidays for the next two months- good old school days the holiday week end took its toll of acci dental deaths and this district was not immune while the weather may not be classed as a favorite topic it at least rates high in most conversations the six week s build up for the elections did not continue six days after the event was over of course the post mortems and
