the trend to lean on qovernmenti for all guidance and help we can and likely will have a grnnd re union and celebration ifm year marking the ran inrj of acton to town itatut it will be a tucotts it every cltien oini in and takei a part as we uid before there are over 2600 people in acton bwide the nine who sit on council and we never coy id tee that those nine men should be given all the work of the town to do council has taken the initiative in the town celebration this year let s all get behind and give a lift as we used to do back fh the days be tore government controls and regulations taught us to be such spineless and leaning creatures lot s do a community job in a community way by all the community participating the next meet ing is on march 17th for every cition of acton and district our great tl investment this is the week the importance of education 4 sir ssed as thi foundation of rjood citi nship education has rightly been d scrilicd as an invest merit in people a survey mndc by the united slates chamber of commerce covering many countries shows a direct r intion ix iwi h th educational t vet and tht standard of livinq re gardless of natural resources or other apparently important facts all of us are interested in im proving the levc i of prosperity and tht standard of living perhaps we have not bet n sufficiently concerned with the educational investment in our people required to bring about this improvement while the control of education lies with the various provinces education i essentially a com munity responsibility and we should be working to study our educational system to under land its needs and to make our schools an integral i art of community life the election of the best possible citizens to serve on school boards the problems of admim stration finance and sources of revenue of ade quale planning and liudqetmg for future qrowth and development of securing and retaininq in the profession the most capable men and women teachers of recognition of their important status in the community and of close cooperation among parents teachers and business and indus try are all important matters which should be studied wise decisions must be based on facts not opinions facts can be obtained only by study and research much con be done to assist those charged with the responsibility for education in our town cities and villages to do their work better and to bring to cituens in general a better appreciation of what is being accomplished and of the task that lies ahead education week in canada is march 5th to 1 1th and herein liej an opportunity for organiza tions in our communities to recognize this im portant week in some way ed and such approval must be paid for by th municipalities if municipal expenditures are in creasing the fauft in most cases does not he with municipal councils who are harassed at every meeting or at every corner for more attention wicjn service lower taxes and quite often giving councit service without receiving even outof pocket expenses we always understood the function of the municipal board was to curb over expenditure of the municipalities and to give advice and guidance ii might be well to take a look at government requirements that have added to muntcipat taxes ourmg the past few years for over a quarter of e century we have been very close to municipal councils we have never found them to be the spend thrifts that those in higher public service are the local municipal servant is too close to itie taxpayer to be a spend thrift very long his term is usually one year and not four and his conduct of municipal affairs is very dose lo himself and his neighbours toczlfovlslfolicoirzd recollections oi acton ctoptfotfcslfoy municipal councils not to blame all across canada municipal taxpayers are receivirp bad news expenditures are going up and so are tax rates in the last 10 years as a re cent survey in the financial post revealed muni cipal expenditures have lumped almost 60 with a 40 gam since 1945 alone and after a sub stantial period of steady decline municipal debt is on the way up too thus also adding to the burden of the taxpayer members of municipal councils who are sup posed to protect and watch the interests of the municipal taxpayers should watch these trends closely this is not the time to see how much money they can spend or what new proects they can start there are few bargains indeed 6 he red the municipal shopper in the present market continues the post but where oh where is this watchdog of the municipalities icnown as the municipal board and by which municipal expenditure must be approv- ona fjtan alone wftat can one man alone accomplish against the world lost in this tiny planet whirling in the dark immensity of space stifled by the growing complemties of a civilization stitl close to savage ry battered by the struggle for existence what can one man do to keep alive the spark of human generosity and kindness that will warm his heart and set a light to guide his path by joining his hand with others a man can see realized the good he wishes to perform by cooperatjng with others a man can help to stem the currents of misfortune and ill luck that over whelm many red cross is a channel for the kindest impuls es of each one of us it is this great cooperative effort this response from one heart in concert with millions that makes the red cross a living symbol of mercy each year red cross extends the opportunity to every one of us to do something to help others and in the last analysis to help ourselves through its medium we express canada s gene rosily to other peoples of the world in dire need we help our neighbour when misfortune strikes we lay the foundations for a belter health and well being of our own c tiens and the coming generations that s why we say as the annual red cross appeal opens this march give generouty give iom the hi art eastar seal sale durtnq the next few we ks more than 1 so sc rvice clubs throughout ontario will engage in t r annual s lit of easter seals their efforts will be on behalf of an organization of which they form a vital and viqorous part whose objective t cnnot help but appeal to everyone that obective is the meeting of medical ind surgical skill with children who of tr n otherwise would not rec ive such attention the ontario soci ty for crippled children has grown from a big idea with a small in ginning to the point when lodiy is aligns scores of people in a chain 0 curative effort for hundreds of children its methods art simple in th s sc entifir age we have the skills to correct conditions which cnpple yet wi also have countless children ither born with deformities or stricken by such plagues as polio many such children in fact most of those who are most seriously affected 1 ve in remote areas or in communities where specialized attention is not available many are children of families with insufficient funojs to provide such attention through its district nurses each specially tamed and recognized by the government as qualified orthopaedic instructors these children are sought by contact with local medical officers school officials and similar authorities clinics are held to which the society brings outstanding consultants volunteers from famous hospitals here diagnosis is made treatment prescribed nnd if needed arrangements made for hospital ization this work js sponsored in local centres by service clubs upon the clubs fall heavy expen ses the volume of benefits to children has grown tremendously in recent years so has the cost every seal sold for this cause means the work can continue and another child will be helped remember this when you are offered easter seals this year back in 1900 tajt trom tlta
