th community and buinss irt one of our exchngea we rd this week of hotel in the nortuern taction of this province tna had changed hands for th good of the tourist bonnets we fell that wii good newt we recall being in that section on different occasions end of visiting this particular place end selecting it et the mot likely to appaate our hunger we found the management argumentative and un willing to induce business we heard of others who were avoiding the town became of the treatment given a the town it eacellently located for lounti business we visited stores there end found them doing well but the management of the hotel was certainly not assisting the community we decided we would rvt stop in that town again until the hotel did change management now we are anxious to tee what effect the new management wilt have we often wonder it those serving the public realise what effect their attitude to the public has on their own business and the business of the community one poor butinessman can leave a poor impression for the whole commun fty perhaps that s the reason for the sign so often displayed under new management don t give your town a bad name by your treat ment of the stranger or visitor the folks in town usually know you but the vmtor has only moment t acquaintanceship and a hurried valu etion of your friendship year of stark tragedy canada last year suffered the greatest fire loss in more than a quarter of a century re sources minister winters recently announced a total of 7046 forest fires were reported to have consumed j 000 ooo in tlmberlands and fire fighting in damage to timber young forest growth and other property it represents a fin uncial toss of nearly 16000000 cost of fighting the forest fires last year rose to more than s3 000 000 but the financial loss is not the only thing that affects the public and the general good of canadians no reliable estimate or approximation can be given of the loss of wild life or natural beauty in canada by the ravaging flames of a forest fire it was with great interest that we noted the establishment of a junior forest ranger camp for the training of youth to assist m fire watching during the summer months the 2500 000 acres that were burned over last year would indeed present a stark and some what ghastly appearance if these areas were placed together and allowed to stretch their bar ren appearance in what would seem an unending expanse with vacation time at hand the people flock to the vast forest areas m n attempt to return to nature the flight is not usually complete and the man made matches and inflammables are usually included careless handling of these things is what creates the stark tragedy and annual spread of burned out timber the junior forest rangers and fire watchers that dot the north timber lands can only spot the blaze when it has started and is sometimes beyond control it is the duty of every t protect an extensive natural resource by attach ing care with fire and forest perhaps in this way the number of man made fires wilt decrease this year rather than increase any season open season any season of the year seems to be oppor tune for strangers to make a descent on towns to collect money at the expense of the commun ity- the walkerton herald tells of one of these when two strangers came to that town to solicit ads in the clifford high school year book at 50 per pagr one can easily f qure out what this pair were makinq if a compai son ij made of the usual charges of anv leva i organisation with this 50 per page of 6x9 inches local organizations require and deserve the support of the public and the merchants it will be found their charges for soliciting advertising are reasonable contributions to the protect we suggest however that it is good business practice to turn down flat the solicitation for advertising offered by strangers from all across the coun try you can find examples similar to that re ported in watke rton they are reported often in every community and always the same story that the local merchant has been the victim beware of the stranger who asks for adver tising in an unknown publication its a waste of good money and a poor value your local newspaper and the local organizations you know can give you value for your advertising dollar and at a reasonable price they are here to back up their claims not only today but every day of the year a fitting climax many tetters have reached our desk besides the usual flow they are notes of appreciation and congratulation on last weeks issue which we read with a great deal of injerest and the letters were so kindly that we were indeed deeply louched last week the special anniversary issue of trie free press was distributed and for trie multi tude of appreciative comments we have tveard regarding it we are truly grateful a great deal of time was spent searching tlte files for items which we hoped would interest you end to all appearances they have readers most interested in the historical issue were those who could remember some of live items and ttn extract from one such reader says have spent most of thl evening reading it and as i did so many memories were aroused i shall certainly treasure the paper another complaint it give turn the blues mi e third says it makes him feel old local citizens have vivited our office to extend congratulations and our window displaying a variety of old pictures attracted quite a bit of at tendon and interest one reader on his visit to our office claimed he picked up the paper before supper and became so interested that he neglected to eat his evening meal for over two and one half hours he read on these comment are greatly appreciated by the taff and they feel that the e1ra effort put forth in presenting the historical issue was well worth while the congratulatory remark pro vide a fitting climax to ihe months of work and preparation that went into the presentation of the special anniversary dition your evidence of appreciation has amply repaid us for our effort a raging controversy a controversy has been raging in the na tion s capital that threatens to bring about a social revolution it is quickly spreading to other centres too briefly it is the question of shorts the right of sweltering citizens to cool off by exposure is being queried in fact the right of citicns to dress ai they please is inducing controversy on both sides of the dominion apparently british columbia has definitely decided however thet the doukabors should wear something to get back to this short discussion however various opinions have been expressed by organizations and editorialists across the continent one editorialist claims that in the mammal classification of the animal world man is the onty naked creature and in all animal life the earth worm most nearly resembles man from the standpoint of nudity to be only fair in thu discussion however we feel that the types of people involved should be scrutinized and if a law can be made on measurements perhaps it would be advisable the middle aged man expanded from long hours of sitting we dont think is the type for shorts and of course that includes members of the fair sex the thin scrawny person briefly attired provokes a feeling of pity the aging woman who clings to the notion that vanishing years ran be obliterated with a careful paint job can not camouflage her years in shorts this by law before the ottawa council seems i to us rather foolish in the earlier days taws such as these were passed to exert pressureon the morals of the citizenry but this question of shorts seems to be one that should be governed by the law of discretion it is a private taw those who wear shorts should make their own dec sions considering timeliness and cccas en editorial notes almost time some real live action was taken en the swimming pool proect either forward or backward if a part construction can be made then its time to- get started before people forget about the thing entjrely 4 the good old days may have seemed better back in 1900 tawn jrttm fh u of ci r jvu of thursday jul 17 i mo a rtrw l4ws1k from mill hi 1st tin-
