pack two the acton free press thonsdxv may 10th 1951 mothers day long before we had a special mothors day great men were saying groat things of mothers that have been recorded there was no mothers day when lincoln midi all that i amor hope to be i owe to my angel mother it wasnt in a mothers day oration that napoleon said the future destiny of the child is always the work of fhe mother it seems only fitting that in recent years a day would bo observed to honor the mothers the thought has alwuys been in the hearts of all it required but a suggestion for an acceptance of mothers day i so wo come to the mothers day of 1951 its another mothers day but perhaps a difforcnt one from last year for you mothers like all good things leave us and wo may have only the memory where in other yearfr we had her in per son most of us like mothers day and it takes no particular urge to have its general observance there is no proclamation from governments set ting the day aside there is no compulsion for its observance except that of the hoart or con science woar a flower send her a letter give a gift honor her memory do as you wish but it s im possible to let mother s day go by without every man woman and child marking it in some special way sunday is mothers day common words communism and democracy words that we hear every day and yet their meaning has apparently become vague in many minds as communist is becoming associated automatical ly with people we don t like or we think don t like us and anyone upholding democracy seems acceptable without further ado just what are democracy and communism impartially and briefly here are a few authora tative facts democracy is a form of government based on ihe self rule of the people and in modern times on the freely elected representative institutions and an executive that is responsible to the peo ple as well as a form of government it is a way of life based on the assumption that all men are equal and have equal right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness and this includes the liberty of thought and expression although democracy was considered by aristotle to be an inferior type of government the fact that he considered it proves the long his tory behind our present form of government i democracy comes from the greek words for people and rule it is interesting that a great nineteenth cen tury philosopher immanuel kant thought that the only way for permanent peace to exis was to have democratic government in each separate country of the world and the ideal of the league rf nations and now the united nations is a world of peaceful countries all with self rule and what is communism communism has been adopted in the past by many who seriously believed it to be a solution to the world s pioblevns the name is loosely applied to a social organization aiming ar the common pro perty of the means of production or at an equal distribution of wealth or both but tnis has narrowed down in recent times to the doctrine which was lenin s platform when tie came into power in russia in 1917 after the revolution in this sense the communism we hear ofn russia today is not the full doctrine of the main communist theor st karl marx at all and is ottacked by theorists marx in his writing hoped that communismwas a means to a better end democracy but there is no sign at all of this happening in russia as far as we know lenin used minority rule and dictatorship which have apparently been earned on with ust as much force by stalin communism too has quite a history it be gan originally as a thoroughly philanthropic movement based on the bible it is impossible to tell ust what has become of christian and even marxian ideals in the communism we know today editorial notes an editorial writer in editor and publisher magazine of new vqrk pays he editors of weekly newspapers this compliment the pub lisher of the weekly dots more hard work and gets less out of it than any other worker i know he is the balance wheel and safety valve of the neighbourhood he serves his influence is at ways or the good and i salute him as brother he has my sympathies and is close to my heart to make those few remarks for him gives me iy ignorance or confusion canadian readers of the now york sunday times must have got quite a shock at ono of jhe fifteen new questions asked in that pgbllca lions regular feature the other day say tho financial post this was what is canadas capi iau over the years canadians have become ac customed or reconciled to a good deal of ameri can ignorance of canadian geography and now that the famous quints are growing up many of our good friends south of the border have ovon forgotten where callander is ignorance isnt confined to south of tho bor der for instance how many are sure which is the national anthem in tho usa the star spangled banner or my country tis of thee and even in canada our national anthem seems to vary between o canada arid god save the king depending of course on where you are we are not sure that its so much ignorance as it is confusion caused by so many countries being discussed in so many paper and so irttle time to assimilate all tho information that is available these days simple questions asked these days get many ridiculous answers if you don t behove it ust listen to some of the quiz shows or the gallup polls be patient sui im shaking out his piggy bank as castas i can the good old days may have seemed better back in 1901 14ooo in canada canadas population has more than doubled since the beginning of the century and has in creased fivefold in the last 100 years when the count of the ninth decennial census to be taken in june 4jecomcs available it is expected that canadas population will exceed 14000000 and it may possibly do so by a margin of 100000 persons the population in 1951 of the nine older provinces will be approximately 13740000 a century ago it was 2436000 and in 1901 it was 5371000 newfoundlands population to be counted in a canada wide census for the first time in 1951 has been tentatively estimated at 355 000 at the turn of the century the popula tion of newfoundland was 221000 the largest rate of increase in canada s population took place during the decade 1901 1 1 when there was a rise of about one third but the largest absolute gain will be in the period 1941 51 when it is expected there will be an in crease of 2 250000 persons without including the population of newfoundland in the firsi de cade of the present century there was a pheno menal growth in the population of the prairie provinces while during the past decade the largest rate of increase has occurred in british columbia there has been a radical shift in the popula tion from rural to urban areas in the last half century in the 40 years between the censuses of 1901 anil 1941 the urban population rose from 3 per cent to 54 per cent of the total the city ward movement has accelerated during and since the war and it is estimated that approxt mately 60 per cent of the population is resident in urban areas you want pay for it the mail a newspaper often receives appears so contradictory we mean the twexent letters of propoganda from so many sources we canadians certainly have individualism in this grist we find resolutions and articles asking for assistance to so many causes institutions and anoys interests and producers then perhaps the next few envelopes opened will be articles on repealing of taxes and injustice at their im position what we are constantly on the lookout for is o plan which will have an equitable approach to desires and a statement of how the project will be financed when such a complete document i received its really too involved to understand why couldn t each appeal be self contained for instance possibly the lobby is for more mon oy and greater grants for part of our educational r the need is likely quite justified but why not a complete picture saying the amount that should be granted this phase of our life and how it is proposed to raise the amount don t let us just say it will be provided by some govern ment or they but let s face the facts and say the amount will be raised by an increase in your cost of living its about time wt quit fooling ourselves that the other fellow will have to pay for the things we urge the other fellow is likely figuring the same way our costs ot living our subsidies our socalkd necessities of every day living cost somebody and that somebody is you if we want to cart for the aged and provide more pensions it t s make up our mind that we have to pay for t it may bt hidden m sales tax income tax gasoline liquor or cigarette tax but there are no nrants or special service or wars that are not paid for by you and all avenues for your escape are closed pro of thunday may 9th i9oi council met on monday evening it was moved by h jeans second ed by h swackhnmer that perm anent pavements be constructed on that part of mill st
