the acton free pres thursday july 26th iss1 f its a health trend the financial poll in the current issue makes he following comment on the drift of popula tion 6 the smaller centres in the united states in recent years there has been a substantial movement of people from the bi cities into the suburbs and nearby townsr aecordlngtotherecentamericari census since the and of the last war it is estimated some 5 million persons have joined this trek from the countrys 168 metropolitan centres it will be a good thing for canada if the current census here reveals a similar trend with modern transportation it is no longer necessary nor desirable for people to live lam- packed into narrow streets alongside the factory or office that employs them they are far health ier and in these critical times far safen spread out over a wider area in this way they can get away from the smoke the traffic and the high tension of the thickly built up urban centres they shoutd also be able to find cheaper living and they won t for one thing have to build bomb shelters before the automobile and the bus such decentralization was impossible or at loast im practicable for the average city man it was nee essary 10 have his home within walking distance of a tramline and there was the matter of con veniences running water sewers and even electric i n of the big city or town now as a u s writer recently pointed out people are finding the vil lago and even the country near our larger cen tres is metejy an extension of the big city so far as conveniences and entertainment are concern ed without the big city s noise dirt and con gestion the present generation will probably see such places as montreal end toronto proper reach their maximum population if they have not already done so the big expansion in future will almost certainly be in the smaller centros and particularly those that lie within 50 to 75 miles of our main industrial areas a summer delight a drive through the country these days re veals the crops in this section were never more bountiful we know the wet weather hampered the harvesting of the hay crop but the crop that vas harvested filled most of the barns it is el- wa regretted when there is any waste and we do hopeharthereweretrormariyfamiersdcslng what we saw on one farmburning the surplus hay wheat is being cut now and indications are for a bumper crop its been a long time since we have noticed the fields of oats so heavy and in many cases up to the fence tops the farmer of course has precarious business so many factors can make or mar his yield and estimates can never be reliable until theharvest rs safely housed fortunately not all the storms strike in a i the agricultural section and our modern trans portation systems can make a distribution of the harvest from across canada or from other count ries of the world its a different world of today from the early days of those who settled this land and a crop failure in one section was a real hardship for that whole year we recall often hearing of a late june frost of 1859 that ruined all the wheat crop and families in that area had no white flour for a whole year those were the days that were not so good as these days of 1951 yes the crops this year are bountiful and a treat to view these iimmnrriiiy the municipalities agree civic holiday which is the one holiday of the year controlled by each municipality has come to be very uniformly observed on the first mon day of august there has to our knowledge been no collusion on the part of the cities towns and villages to have this arrangement come about but the date became so logical that it has been accepted with almost unanimous approval the august date distributes the public holidays pretty well throughout the summer the monday is again proven popular and in spite of the fact that it is in the power of each municipality to al ter it to any date that may best suit the munici pality we hear of no urge or clamour for a change we often wonder if there isn t a fine ex ample here for the dominion government to claim in may and july holidays on monday but each year parliament passes the buck and we have the same confusion surely when municipalities can come to the common sense observance of civic holiday so easily the domin ion government can see the logical in making victoria and dominion day fall on mondays or do we have to have the municipalities do the t towns show increases dominion census figures recently secured show that the towns of halton have undergone considerable growth since the former census of 1941 and we have no doubt that the figures for the townships in halton will show the same growth in population situated ashbttcttls near the distribution centres it is only reasonable to expect e continued growth arid a good share in the years to come of the estimated expansion of canada as a whole taken by towns the following figures are very interesting actons 1941 census was given as 2063 while the 1951 census is given as 2 898 an increase of 835 in the decade milton s population figure ten years ago was compiled at 1 964 and the latest figure is 2 449 an increase of 485 georgetown in 1941 had a population of 2562 and this years census shows 3 435 an increase of 873 burlington s population ten ears ago was 3 815 and the figure this year is 6 0i4 an increase of 2 209 oakville s popula lion in 1941 was 4 115 and the figure in 1951 is 6 741 for an increase of 2 626 which makes it the largest town in the county and also the town to show the greatest increase in population in the past decade y it will be of further interest to view the population trend when the township f gures are made available hnd in this respect it appears that nelson township is likely to show the greatest giowth so long on friday night we pull the switches let down the blinds lock the doors allow the ink to dry in our pen give the pencil sharpeners a rest until after civic holiday we are taking our an nual vacation ust the same as so many other industries are doing those summer days like them we find closing down is the only way the entire staff can get a real holiday we do hope you miss us next week but we assure you well be back on hand the week following with a bigger than ever budget of news and views and we hope some freshening up as a result of the vacatipn we hope too that no one will be seriously inconvenienced by our holiday period and we ore planning tq hove oil urgent commercial printing delivered before fridoy wo have included some double features in this week s edition so until our next visit on august 9th so long editorial notes the intermediates have been playing good ball this year and they deserve the support of spectators who can cheer for the all home town team looks as if the days of cheap money are over and the man who was depending on income from investments would get m6re returns for his investment drownings and highwoy accidents continue to spoil our holiday weekend drive safely and play safely so that friends will not be saddened unnecessarily next year i how i can afford a boat to oo with it the good old days may have seemed better other friends in wishing him many years of enjoyable leisure the cosj of education is terrific and some thing ought to be done about it why last year it cost ontario 110 million that is only 87 million less than we spent on liquor surely no body can expect us to spencj as much on educa tion as we do on pleasure comments the ches ley enterprise we add that perhaps our educa tion may be to
