paoz two the acton free press thursday atjctost 23rd 1mi away from home f6r tho pstweel your editor and his wife havo boon in winnipeg atlondlng the thirty sec ond convention of tho canadian weekly newt- papers association and meeting and discussing pwbjamtw4threpms ten p vlnces but moroparticularly getting a western slant since manitoba was host province we have been subjected to tho western atmosphere not only from delegates but also from notables of winnipeg and manitoba we went out a carefreo member and came back with the added duty of a director of tho associationone of four from the province of ontario but well not write of newspaper interest but rather of travel and of common intorests to folks in gonoral and those one moots who know ftionds of tho home community wo had never made the boat trip from port mcnicoll to fort william before and wo found it o most dolightful way of travel giving a fine op portumty for relaxation and a sunburn that was easily acquired and so painfully defired the two steamers making the trip are the kewatin and tho assiniboine and this trip jhe assiniboine carried about 200 passengers state rooms are ample and food is excollont then thore ore the ship board acquaintances one is mnrl to moot like the mining engineer who nihihj lluoi -was- loymo in travel seeing the country through the eyes of his wife s there were also several newspaper folks to meet and converse with we went prepared wlth anabundance of reading material and usecl very little of it tho lakes were as calm as our own mill pond and tho sail had nothing 1o mar it we were told that much blowing of the ships whistle one viight was owing to a light fog worlds busiest waterway we have read of statistics on the shipping in the st marys river and the soo locks seeing is believing all day sunday we met these freighters loaded to the water line with their cargoes of gram ore and oil wr won t delve into figures but we can believe with ease any estimates of the cargoes carried by canadian and united states freighters during the hurried navi gation season the locks at sault ste mane are fast and ef ficent the boat is through in a matter of ten minutes or so it s ust up and over and on your way tpjleswesterly end of lake superior sunday ntght on shipboard found a couple of accomplished pianists and some good singers there were solos by a fine tenor passenger but mostly singing of familiar songs old and new and favourite hymns a hurried breakfast before docking at fort william and a 12 hour train trip landed us in winnipeg at the royal alexandra hotel which was to be our home for the week western welcome we have attended conventions in several cities m the thirty two years since our first con vention and the first of the association in but at none hove we experienced a more welcome or a more genuine desire on the part of province city and daily and weekly press than at this year s convention in winnipeg tuesday the daily newspapers of winnipeg were hosts at luncheon with a splendid address on the words we use by carlyle allison of the winnipeg tribune at a reception we were guests of the cana dian pacific railwoy and dinner guests of the city of winnipeg with mayor coulter and mrs coulter as host and hostess speaker was sched uled to be the mayor but he skilfully arranged for f c winspar notional president of the canadian chamber of commerce to present the address he gave a splendid talk on canadian culture and we were enterjained by a broadcast over cbl from the hotel dining room a winnipeg daily captioned our dehbera tions of the day manitoba weeklies rap liquor ad ban it took some searching to find where the heading was obtaintd in one of the commit tee reports we wondertd if the dailies wtre not using the weeklies to further their own desires on advertising k luncheon speaker of tin second day was hon hilles but vse m sstd tins event to attend rotary incidentally winnipeg was the first canadian city to form a rotary club and its slo gan is the club that made rotary international it is no jo speaker was william c bruce dis trict governor there must have been 25 or 30 v sitors from all parts of canada and the united states at our table were three winnipeg mem bers one of whom was a native of winnipeg others at the table were from toronto ren frew cayuga and acton and milton that eweraing the t eaton co was host to dinner andntttertamment power and paper strange as it may seem that in the forty year fn which wo have been printing on paper we had until last thursday never been in a paper mill so it was that we specially anticipated the jrjpto pinefajisnoijih ofwinnipcgand n trip through a newsprint mill and later to tho 20 mil fion dollar powor development of tho manitoba hydro from tho pulp logs whoro thoy entered the bark removing machines to the chipper burners blending tanks screens filters wo saw tho logs go into pulp and emerge from tho dryers as newsprint to bo put on reels cut in various size rolls in tho winder and cutter and go in tho freight cars ready for the newspaper presses of tie world also at pino falls we saw construction on the big powor proect with its six generator two of which will go into service in december going over half the outside construction gave groat ap potites for the steak dinner served in the camp cook house where crawley and mccrackon termed as canada s biggest cooks are feeding the 500 men on the ob prime minister douglas l campbell of mam tdba was on the tour a brief speaker at dinner and a very enthusiastic conversationalist on the province like many others on the party we en 1iyfh a hnpf rhlt with him ms thr prdects were twuck umetc5 6hs at the dinner that e givenbylmperial oil co and presided ovor by mr frank pender gast the hon campbell was the speaker and we enjoyed learning of some of the gram problems nofwe stern canada the dancethat followed dinner arranged by the massey harris company found us too weary to make anything but a brjef appearance the final session an 8 30 breakfast given by the canadian as sociation of advertising agencies was followed by reports of committees and our name orr the list of directors luncheon that day was at the fort garry hotel owned by the canadian national railways as their guests speaker was mr j r mcmillan of the cnr that morning the daily papers had predicted an over 500 million dollar crop from the western provinces and it was interesting to learn of the problems of moving this grain to market but also to hear the assurance that the railways would do their ob following luncheon a group photograph a meeting of the new board of directors and more pictures gave little time for relaxation- before a reception by johnston everson and charles worth and the annual association trophy dinner as you already know halton did very well vuth casey woods of the oakville trafalgar journal bringing home the community service trophy and your editor a certificate for third place for the best front page for the acton free press following the dinner another reception by the new president for the officers and their wives presented a delightful opportunity for visiting and also an opportunity to meet mrs coulter whom maclean s magazine recently featured in a special article our impression was that she would be a marvellous help to the mayor in his duties a very bright woman who had won a place for herself and her husband in winnipeg in her four ears residence east and west friends in winnipeg we met and visited were a former wren in the canadian navy who had visited at our home during the war years and whose home is in winnipeg a dinner table acquaintance mr and mrs fallis turned out to be relatives of bob macarthur of our staff and we had an interesting visit mr fall is is chair man of manitoba hydro saturday morning we visited the winnipeg frte press and toured the plant and learned of two former members of the acton free press staff who had served for many years on the western paper climaxing our western visit was dinner with mr j kerr brown a brother of messrs a t and r n brown of acton who has been in winnipeg over forty years to mr brown we owe much for seeing winnipeg he took saturday afternoon from his busy drug store and following dinner drove ui on a tour of the c ty to such spots as assmido tie and kildoan parks and the historic old fort garry selkirk and a trfo along the river roads of the red and assiniboine winnipeg is proud of its parks and has usti fiable reason for pride they are spacious have great deauty and usefulness for its citizens and visitors evidence was seen on every side that citizens appreciate the foresightedness that has reserved thesemme park areas through the city continued on pafje srven what excuse
