the acton free press acton ontario niimsoky beijtbmnih 27 idsi understanding youve all heard the old saying the man worth while is tho man who can smile when everything goes dead wrong it took some smiling to see through- the moisture that fell on saturday inwjiytht mado onofoolthatper haps noahs ark would bo noodod to got from the fair grounds but it was truly remarkable tho philosophical way in which president parker and secretary swackhamer and all tho difoctors and officials and the whole public took the drench ing downpour between showers the crowd darted from one spot to another and exhibitors took sheltor they showed horsos in the rain on a muddy track the children rode on the merrygoround and ferns wheel as the rain drenched thorn and tho only complaint we heard from everyone was it s too bad officials felt sorry for patrons and exhibit ors and visitors- and exhibitors folt sorry that the prospects of a bumper fair were drowned in the deluge everyono scorned willing to share dis appointment and got understanding of the com mon problem in tho woather condition the advisability of having tho arena in acton park was well demonstrated on this occasion it provided a splendid centre to carry on the fair program the fair was well equipped to handle thr nmnrnnnrybntwilj very tjinnkjuljfll never isugain called upon to deal with such a situation in its history it was the wettest fair day in the history of acton fafr no group favours wo are heartily in accord with the principal given by dr h h hannam at a meeting in mil ton last week that price controls must be all in elusive in their application there has been alto gether too much clamoring of various groups for price control on the things they have to buy and e demand for hands off on the things they sell it would appear too that our distribution costs have gone entirely out of bounds with our pro duction costs and while the price of farm pro ducts are high when thoy reach the consumer the farmer is not receiving on unduly high price for his products sometimes there is more clamouring from large groups without a thorough analysis of the items which make forrfgh prices too often the hlame is placed on the wrong party dr han nam s analysis at the meeting was very informa tive and there can be no quarrel wilh his reason mg the sooner we forget controls and govern ment manipulation of prices and cjtt back lo free trade among a free people the better our sys tern of choosing our governments is such tint qovernmenl eonlrolof prices becomes but a re flection of the largest and most vociferous cnoup we need to guard our system of free en terprise the sooner the qovernmonl gets out of the price control field the be for a concern ld its false economy and can lead only to otoup struqgleond turmoil we ve had so much government regulation as wartime measures that we are becoming very helpless in fret enter prise pleasure and beauty roads have been a prolly touchy suboct locally for some time but now tho commonl has changed since visitors arc travoffinn on smooth surfaces and are loud in thoir praisisomho im provomont more and more the favcjured route to toronto is gelling to bo down no 25 high way on what tho elora express says is as flno a pieco of road as we have soon for a long time motorists aro finding that this route which goes from acton to milton and thonco to oilhor the dundas highway or tho quoon elizabeth way avoids bottlenecks in traffic all along fhe routotmd provides the bot road surfaco to bo found anywhere recent improvomonls on tho dundas highway add to tho enjoyment of this route rpr scenic beauty of course the route for no 25 has long been acknowledged as ono of the finest in those parts now with a fine road surfaco there is no discorhfort to the onoymont of the trip its small wonder lhat the now road is rapidly gaining in popularity as a route from this district to the city st thi nick part ohi kvou suhir take thb or slmf in the park facing facts for the past four years a special committee composed of representatives of educational busi ness agricultural and labor groups has been making a study of secondary education in cana da says the financial post the main purpose was to consider what constitutes a suitable train ing for students who go directly into employ ment from high school the importance of that field can be udged by the fact that the great bulk of canadian youth never go beyond high school in their formal education and only about one third of those who stdrl high school ever complete the fu i course thouqh there have been some recent changes on the whole our high school education eems to be based on the wrong assumption that all students can will and should go on to uni veisity emphasis has been placed on those spe 1 al subects which are compulsory for in versik entrance there has been far too i ttle attempt to oive the much greater number of students who will neer go beond high school an educat on uited to tneir spec al needs to correct this grave weakness and iius tee members of the committee make several recommendations it t to be hoped th it these get the widest and most serious consideration of equal or even greater importance is their empl a sis on closer and better rela ons between the schools and universities and the bus ness 1 fe of the community each could benefit groat bv knowing a
