consignment sale the sale wai abtbnven thrlltbrtkftattnr offered were sired by ojateln bulls in the maple artificial inseminat ion unit- the 57 head sold wore drawn i from 35 herds over the several counties served by the unit most of these breeders had not invested heavily in fashionable jines of holstein blood in fact their only claim to fame was that their voting stock carried the blood of the splen did battery of black and white bulls in the maple unit only a few of these herds had been on record of performance and most of the animals offered had no record backing on the dams side on the sires side there was splendid record backing it was not to be expected that caltlc with most of the appeal on the one side of the pedigree would cell at ultra high prices they did sell at good prices however and demonstrated the value of such bulls as are found at the maple unit in just average registered herds the 57 head brourht 21g32sq an average of h4 per head the 15 milking females nveraged 532 s3 bred h infers averaged t5uv i 1 open yearlings 320 and eight hei tyr calves 358 the lop prices were paid where there was record breeding on both sides of the pedigree the toj price of 1100 was aid of hugh coulson on pedigrees sold the 57 head in less than three hours the comment that was heard more frequently than any other wns that the cattle offered were exceptionally- well grown this could not all be attributed to good breeding we listened in while one con signor told the group around his two year old heifer that the heifer weighed 200 lbs more than her dam at mnturity you mast have been extra good to the heifer said one of the group the big bulls at the unit had more to do with it was thewners reply again arid again we heard sim ilar comments these men were sure that with the good bulbf available at n well managed in- scm i nation centner ouch as ifie maple unit they were getting bel ter type animals than would havd been possible from sires that they could have afforded an individuals there must be n lot of people who are thinking in this way mr g w keffer manager of the unit told me that in the first six months of this year the unit had an in crease of 64 per cent in insemin ations and 24 per cent in member ship he estimates that the number of inseminations this year may reach 35000 holding of the first consignment sale of its kind was in keeping with
