the acton free press acton ontario i thursday- november 33 im1 representatives wanted with provincial elections behind us it is certainly time for cltlwsns to turn tholr thoughls to tho important posts to be filled on the municipal front whore so many important items of buslnoss jre tr each year it seems likely that the positions will bo filled again this year as in so many years gone by el though there is often cause p wonder why certainly if there was no such thing as public spiritednoss the posts would go vacant because any councillor will point out that remuneration is far from compensating in terms of dollars and cents each year there is a big question that arises who will conduct the municipality s affairs this year and will they do so efficiently just what aie some of the things that are expected of a councillor and perhaps then you will find somo one who can fill a sufficient number of the qualifications an ideal councillor of course knows all tho people whom he represents he is experienced in high finance and knows the ideil time to continue with public works and debenture issues he is i diplomat that can smooth over the many touchy items that arise in the administration he is a competent udge of character and knows which men should be hired for which ob he is a legil tactician that can steer a clear course through the legal haze that is pfton set up he is a mind reader that tries to please the citizens that don t comment on a subject until it has biten pro ceeded with and then unleash their strongest c iticisms he is sympathetic and listens attentive ly to the multitude of complaints that are bom basted on his oar during his term ho is an in spector who surveys the town street by street to make sure everything is in good condition he owns his own business or is free at all times to leave and attend to important town matters he is energetic and has the required stamina to talk think and sleep the municipality s business at all times yes he is quite a fellow this ideal councillor the ideal is of course impossible but still those appointed to the positions of trust are usually conscientious hard working individuals who realize there a lh to be done and are willing to accept the responsibilities that accompany it wo as citizens should be thankful for their wtl lingness to serve and do their best there is seldom a more thankless position for things cannot always go right and it seems to be the mistakes that are so well remembered soon if will be nomination lime andli few citizens will attend and nominate representatives who will perhaps contest an election for the responsible positions you as a citizen should be at the nominations to ensure good representation for your municipal affurs next year don t be the kind that doesn t nominate doesn t vote but al ways criticizes the one that is elected do your share and do it conscientiously attend nomini tions laws and loopholes every time we attend a session of court we com away more puzzlod with the working of the law for years we have been puzzled at tho manipulations of police court whore so often the pfiicfliflppaars to he morn nn lriallhflnthortt fonder and wo often wonder how long wo will bo able to socure conscientious polico who take so often tho abuse of tho offondor and roceivo such a brush off often in the courts on tho back of every driver s permit aro spaces for tho registration of convictions ii doesnt say that only certain kinds of convictions are to bo registered and overyono knows full well that not all conviction aro placed on tho permits and in lots of cases three spacos would not bo sufficient to hold what some offenders have against thum it s quite the common practice for charges to be reduced in the court just why we never found out because it seems only logical that tho officer making the charqo would bo belter in formed than tho couit ol the circumstances at the lime of the offense for years we vo sten many a good officer come out of court thoroughly dis gusteel with the tcchnic tlijiei that allow offend t rs who are guilty to escape sometimes without i penalty or with a reduced ch irqe down throuqh the ye us we have often said that we have too miny laws with too many loop holes and that often our courts are niore concern ed with the laws than the administration of common ordinary punishment of the offenders tho highway and liquor laws are providing more and more fodder for our courts we have the laws and regulations to stop a great deal of it but something has happened to take seriousness out of them perhaps this has something to do with our increase of loss of life and property damage on our highways it seems to be an angle that would stand some investigation at least and per haps even a commission to bring in a report it will require only thirty years for auto motivevehicles to kill the second million amen cans as compared with 50 years to kill the first reports the edmonton journal which comments truly man s worst enemy is man on the roads but this need not be traffic accidents are pre ventable you know darn well i haven t goi the difficulties involv ed certainly halton county officials have a dif ferent conception of the plan now to when they embarked upon it five years ago it was argued that the plan would do away with the expense of a new equalization which was due and had been found costly nearly thirty years previously what have been the results for five years a county assessor has been in office and an office established extra assessor help has been at work in every municipality the present result of ill the five years of reassessment is complaints gunst the validity of the bylaw and appeals against the
